Poster Monday: Love

The last Poster Monday spot of March goes to Yang Lijie from China for his poster “Love”. Yang is a Chinese designer and cartoonist. Born in China in 1975, he is currently engaged in graphic design work.

This poster was designed for the 2016 Posterheroes social communication poster contest “Rights in Love”. This poster is one of the 30 best posters selected. There is no restriction on sex, race, nationality or religion. Over the years, this is a basic statement that expresses the equality and freedom of mankind. However, this important move also requires us to extend to the entire planet: some communities and countries are still struggling to obtain equal rights and freedoms. “My poster design is about lesbians. Even homosexuality, their love is a kind of love, love is equal” says Yang Lijie.

Poster Monday: Protect whales

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster from a previously featured designer Su Huimin for his poster entitled “Protect whales”. Su Huimin was born in China and his works have won a number of national and international awards and have been published in foreign websites such as POSTER POSTER, the UN headquarters in New York, Israel, Ukraine, China, the UN headquarters in Europe, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Ecuador, Austria, the Czech Republic, the United States, Germany, Italy, Serbia and other places on display.

The International Whaling Commision  says that it is well known that overexploitation by the whaling industry led to serious declines in many of the world’s populations of whales, although thankfully no species was brought to extinction and many are now in the process of recovering, although not all; that’s why we should not stop being aware of the importance of whales in our world. According to Su Huimin, he created this poster showing “a large number of human killings of whales and other marine life, used to consume at the table. In order to alert people to protect the marine life, the whale’s tail bleeds in the form of plates and other cutlery and flames”.

Ecuador Poster Bienal in China
We are happy to share with you some very exciting news in the world of posters. The Ecuador Poster Bienal is currently exhibiting a selection of amazing posters in the country of China. The show has been carefully organized and curated by an international group of designers and educators. Some of the very best posters that were selected for the Ecuador Poster Bienal will be on display at the Vanke Canal Bund Art Museum in Wuxi, China. It is also worth noting that China has been an invited country to participate in the upcoming 2018 Ecuador Poster Bienal. The exhibition can be seen until Oct. 29th, 2017.

Exhibition: Type + Text

Type + Text Poster Exhibition
The city of Lublin is hosting a poster exhibition focused on typography which is being held at Poland’s beautiful Centrum Spotkania Kultur. This international exhibition presents the works of designers from Poland, Taiwan, China, and Indonesia. The typographic based posters are a collection of works created by over 120 artists who were invited by curators and also selected through a call for entries competition. The Type + Text Typographic Poster Exhibition is an interesting collection of works that reflect upon the different views, cultures, and design approaches used by various countries.

Exhibition: Sha Feng

Sha Feng Poster Exhibition
The poster designs of Sha Feng are graphic, beautiful and powerful. Born in China in 1988, Sha Feng has produced a stunning collection of work that has been featured in many poster exhibitions around the world. He has been a jury member for exhibitions such as the 2016 Ecuador Poster Bienal, the 2016 A’ Design Award, and the 2013 French “Poster for Tomorrow International Poster Festival”.

Currently, Sha Feng is exhibiting a solo show of his personal work in Taiwan. A collection of 45 posters created by the artist are being shown at the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences Art Center. The exhibition was curated by Chen Yu-Ming and Zeng Huai-Kuan. This event is a great opportunity for the public to see a unique show which captures the importance and beauty of poster design. The event opened on June 2nd and will be available to see until June 30th, 2017.

Exhibition: The Culture of the Poster

The Culture of the Poster – Polish poster design from Poznań in Shenzhen, China
A special poster exhibition that connects two very important countries in the field of poster design recently occurred in Shenzhen, China. The Culture of the Poster is an event that brought together 15 of some of the best Polish poster designers to display 100 of their own posters in China. The artists selected for the show represent 3 generations of designers that are associated with the University of the Arts in Poznań. Each of the artists have achieved considerable successes in graphic design: national and international awards, individual and collective exhibitions and numerous publications. Some of the artists being featured in the show are Mirosław Adamczyk, Eugeniusz Skorwider and Grzegorz Marszałek.

The cities of Poznań and Shenzhen have been economically linked for over 20 years and are now collaborating on exciting design opportunities. What makes this exhibition unique is that it combines and presents the work of all of these polish designers spanning generations of design experience. It provides an opportunity to see and learn about poster design from the the Wielkopolska region in Poland, and displays award-winning work that has been recognized by prestigious international design competitions and juries.

Chinese typographic poster exhibition

The solo exhibition of designer Li Xu opened at the Lublin CSK gallery in Poland on October 21, 2016. This exhibition is a retrospective of Xu’s exploration and research of the visual design of Chinese characters. The exhibition introduces the Chinese culture’s respective use of typography while at the same time helping people better understand Chinese culture and inspire new typographic approaches.

Li Xu is an Assistant Professor at the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, creator of posters specializing in typography  The exhibition was curated by Sebastian Smit and Lech Mazurek and it was co-organised in partnership with Maria Curie Skłodowska University’s Faculty of Arts.

About the concept of the exhibition Li explains:  “The character is a silent language which soundlessly expresses its ideas. The characters are lively graphics which narrate their story in every corner of our life. The character constitutes a form of visible communication which builds a bridge among people. Travelling through time and space, the character plays a vital role as far as dissemination of information and exchange of ideas are concerned.

As an important information dissemination medium and cultural symbol, the character is one of the most important elements in graphic design field. Due to the cultural differences among countries, there are many unique characteristics to be considered while designing signs. Hence, characters fromdifferent cultural backgrounds are always full of mystery, make people curious and engaged. In my work so far, I have always been very interested in character design. During recent years, I have created a lot of typography works. From the perspective of visual forms of Chinese characters, I never stop exploring and I am constantly experimenting with graphic design”.

7th China International Poster Biennial 2015

The 7th China International Poster Biennial (CIPB) will be held in November, 2015 at the West lake of Hangzhou, China. This exhibition of posters chosen from throughout the world is intended to provide a review of the current state of international poster design.

Since 2003, CIPB have been held successfully for six times. It was attended by designers and social groups from all over the world. CIPB worked as an international communication platform in the area of graphic design and design education. At the same time, it improved the progress of international graphic design.

As a high reputation educational organization of art and design, China Academy of Art devoted great efforts to organize the CIPB in the past 12 years. Nowadays, CIPB has been recognized by Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China as an official cultural communicative project, and become an important item of The West Lake EXPO in Hangzhou. As one of the best exhibitions in the field of international design, CIPB gathers the most excellent graphic designers in the world as the jury committee, for enhancing China’s and global poster design to a higher level.

Poster Monday: We can not Forget the Memories

For the second Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster from Huimin Su, designed to be a  reminder of the danger of the most extreme form of modern warfare. Huimin was born in China, has a Major in Visual Communication Design, is member of International Design Council (ICO-D) and a ILIA_ International Landscape Planning and Design Industry Association. Huimin ‘s work has been in Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Serbia, China and other places.

Human explains the concept behind the poster: “August 6, 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. 70 years have passed since WWII, but each country has yet to reach full consensus on the war, thereby constraining the overall summary of the lessons of history. Some right-wing forces within countries face potential challenges that may rise to bring peace to the world, international peace forces, including China, should be vigilant, and jointly safeguard the fruits of victory of anti-fascist war. At the same time, to learn the lessons of history, in accordance with the principle of mutual benefit to promote the coordination of national development interests, to lay a solid material foundation for universal and lasting peace. I hope now in peacetime for us; for we are celebrating the victory of the war, do not forget the history!”

Poster Monday: Mourning Tianjin

The second Poster Monday of the day entitled “Mourning Tianjin” comes from United States and it belongs to Keith Kitz. He have a BA from The University of Mount St. Joseph and a MFA from Boston University. Keith its extremely passionate about posters as a communication design medium. Last year, he started making at least one piece a day—something that he continues to do, Mourning Tianjin it’s the number 288. Keith says “I love that this is a medium I can create almost anywhere, and use almost anything as material. I’ve always liked making things and knew at a very young age that I needed to find a way to make a living doing what I love”.

Following the news regarding the deadly explosions in Tianjin, Keith did what most artist do, using his craft to process the event. “Creating the piece was personally therapeutic. I’m hopeful that when others see the piece they too can have a moment of reflection and connection. Though this event occurred on the other side of the globe, I know people here who were personally affected. It’s moments like this that demonstrate that though we are often miles apart, we really are part of one global community”.
