Last Chance to buy Posters at Oh You Pretty Things Shop

Oh You Pretty Things is a webshop run by a collective of filmmakers and visual artists based in Brooklyn NY. They make films, art, books, posters, photographs, clothing, and other fine stuff.

But this will be your last chance to purchase their posters, since the store will no longer be selling any of them as of January 25th.

Iconic posters like  Helvetica Mad Men have already sold out, but there are still a few “Meet the Cast” Helvetica letterpress prints, Objectified and Urbanized posters, and Rams silkscreen prints. Anything left after Monday will just get packed up and put into their archives. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of design history! You can shop here.

Poster Monday: Stay Home

The last Poster Monday spot of October entitled “Stay Home” belongs to Filippos Fragkogiannis from Athens, Greece. He holds an MA in Visual Communication, and a BA in Graphic Design from Vakalo Art & Design College and the University of Derby. Having collaborated with acclaimed graphic and type designers, in 2019 he established his own practice. His research-based approach is rooted in semiotics, symbolism and the structure of visual language. With a genuine passion for typography, Filippos designs posters, print collateral and visual identities. Is member of AIGA and ISTD since 2020.

About “Stay Home” Poster, following the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, Poster Jam’s monthly challenge featuring the word “Home” took on new dimensions. This poster was widely circulated on the web and submitted to various Covid-related design initiatives around the world. The light blue color marks a health and hygiene emergency by closely relating to the color used for water, sterilization and hygiene representations. The poster’s visual impact is subtle while eliciting reliability, acceptance and safety to the viewer. For conveying the message, the widely recognizable font Helvetica is applied on a large scale. Its use relates to the simplicity of the instruction, communicated on a global level, calling for vigilance and adherence. The illustration of crossed arms, found in the letter B of Typefesse Pleine, represents the body part that should be thoroughly disinfected according to state instructions. The gesture of crossing arms can be seen as defensive body language while the form of the letter is reminiscent of a house roof or a bird’s wings, both referencing the notion of safety.

For the first Poster Monday spot of the day we are featuring a graphic designer from Zacatlan, Puebla, Jorge González Morales. He was born in Zacatlán, Mexico, a lover of art and letters, he is passionate about drawing eyes, graphic designer from the “Universidad de Oriente del Estado de Puebla (UO)”, currently a professor at the “Universidad Alianza Hispana” in Chignahuapan., Puebla., Mexico, in the careers of Graphic Design, Advertising and Marketing, also teaching some subjects in the Gastronomy Degree, he makes political cartoons for regional media in Zacatlán and Tlaxcala on television and radio. Active member of the International Design collectives; Red Internacional de Creadores Visuales A.C., Mexico, of Borderless Graphic Designers in Canada and the PosterIran collective in Iran.
His specialty is the poster and illustration, it has been published in various countries such as: Peru, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Spain, Malaysia, China, Peru, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Switzerland, Cuba, Poland, United Arab Emirates, Bolivia, Iran, Venezuela, Ecuador, Italy, Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay, has served as jury of poster contests for countries such as: Taiwan, Malaysia and Mexico.

The poster we are featuring here today entitled “Wisdom and Strength” was designed for the event “The worm of the city”, in China; exhibition against Covid-19, the intention of the image was to show that ancient wisdom of Chinese culture through a representation like the dragon and through the force that it carries its genetics as a country to face COVID-19.

Poster Monday: Medea

The Poster Monday spot of the day goes to Mina Bakliža from Kragujevac, Serbia, for the poster “Medea”.  Mina was born in 1983. She is a freelance graphic designer and is currently doing her master’s thesis at the Faculty of Philology and Arts. So far she has taken part in several national and international art and design exhibitions. These include the Strelka International Design Biennale, Golden Bee, Trnava Poster Triennial, Ecuador Poster Bienal etc. Mina loves creating posters and packaging. The opportunity to do a summer internship in her hometown two years ago has also intensified her interest in theatre and all things related to it. Since then, she has created visual identities for several plays in Kragujevac and Belgrade, too.

In Greek mythology Medea is an enchantress, one of the characters in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece. Betrayed by Jason, she decides to take hideous revenge on her husband by killing their children, thus killing one part of herself, too.

“My plan was to create posters for three ancient Greek theatre plays in which the main characters are women (Antigone, Medea and Niobe). They all have different origins, personalities, weaknesses and strengths, all of which result in their different downfall.” says Mina.

2017 is an important year for the Star Wars community – it is the 40th anniversary of the film series, and in order to celebrate, Texas-based art gallery and print shop Mondo wanted to do something big for the fans by holding their biggest art exhibition yet! Mondo specifically sought out the works of Mike Mitchell, who has been collecting illustrated portraits of the Star Wars characters since February 2016.

Star Wars’ fans formed a two-block line to see Mitchell’s incredible work and the exhibition was a total success! Check out the video of Mike Mitchell explaining a little bit of his art work and view the amazing portraits he created.

If you are a Trump follower, it is a 4 year calendar celebrating his presidency, and if you are against his ideals, this would be a great way to scratch his face every single day.

Xinnie is an illustrator and graphic designer that has created an extraordinary wedding invite full of illustrations that show the loving relationship of Justin and Karen. This creative illustration unfolds to provide more details about the wedding, from the RSVP deadline, to the parking spaces and of course the dress code. Once unfolded, if you flip your invite to see the back side of it you will find your self holding a poster with hand-drawings of the couple’s favourite activities, it also includes illustrated note-cards where the guests can fill in the blanks to complete sentences about the lovely couple. What a clever and interactive way to give your guests a time of joy when receiving your wedding invite!

Poster Monday: Little “Blind” Billy in Concert

Today on Poster Monday we feature Little ‘blind’ Billy in Concert designed by Pierre-Paul Pariseau, a Montreal based graphic designer. Born in Canada, Pierre is a self-taugh illustrator working for a wide range of international clients. His work has been exhibited regularly, internationally.

This poster has been created about a fictitious young blues singer that is blind. Little “Blind” Billy is a young man that, from a young age, was inspired by the blues of the south, his native land. He was born blind. He became a legend in his own time. The poster is presenting one of his last concert, one night only but a memorable night. Little “Blind” Billy died not long after this concert from a plane crash.

Evoking currents of surrealism and pop art, the creative work of Pariseau invites us into a world of images where everything is possible. From his fusion of collage and digital medium; from his visual articulation of thoughts, moods and emotions, emanates dreamlike scenes, strange theatrical dramas while remaining intriguingly accessible. Happy coincidences, anecdotal events inspire the artist in a fantasy that translates into images made of vibrant colors, stunning juxtapositions and hypnotic reveries that are always compelling. His anthropomorphic creations seem to request storytelling but never impose one. Here the creatures are sentient beings, with emotions and personality.

Poster Monday: Drop cap for The Old Man and the Sea

The first Poster Monday spot of the month entitled “Drop cap design for The Old Man and the Sea” belongs to Sıla Özyıldız from Turkey. Sıla was interested in design since high school and studied graphic design in Spain. “I like to work on different styles and poster design allows me to use different techniques in a single work, such as typography and illustration, so I like that” says Sila.

About the poster, Sila says: “First, I illustrated a pattern of sea creatures. Then a letter, and then I made them work together. Book takes place mainly in the sea, and overall experience was not so pleasant. So pattern is in a shape of wave, not a calm and flat surface. Texture of letter is referring to water and wood, one is his only ally, his fishing ship; and the other was his enemy, the endless sea. Red color is blood, most important thing of story. The thing which brought him his ultimate nemesis, the shark.”
