Poster Monday: Sacred Heart of Jesus

The first Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to István Horkay  from Hungary for his poster entitled Sacred Heart of Jesus.

We decided to let our Poster Master István Orosz tell you a little bit about István Horkay: “freelance graphic artist, poster designer, animator and filmmaker has a great significance in Hungarian cultural life and his international fame as a designer is also well-known. He works in an extremely conscious way, for him, to be up-to-date and to be modern mean the constant analysis and courageous innovations of the thematic and formal elements, and also the consequent avoidance of the usage of common place In his home-country, that is, in Hungary, he is an active member of the Poster Association”.

About his poster István says “Along the borders of dreams I found for you the sacred poisonous heart and golden door” is a phrase taken up Sacred Heart is Dio‘s third studio album  Sacred Heart, as well as also referring to the group Shakespears Sister.

UK home cinema specialist Superfi,  is back with a new series of work. In this project, the team has recreated popular movie posters, imagining what they would look like if the films were made into musicals. The funny posters feature movies like Jurassic Park, Terminator, Jaws, among many other action films. What action film would you like to see as a musical?

In our poster explorations we came across this great old Disney movie poster collection, featuring a  gallery with 54 original Disney movie posters.  Here we share some of our favorites, it’s interesting to observe how the images have evolved with the introduction of digital illustration techniques. Cadaver Destruido Movie Poster

The Ecuadorian movie Cadaver Destruído (Destroyed Corpse) was inspired by the surreal exercise known as the exquisite corpse, where the collective participation of different members help to shape the final art piece. In this case 120 participants send a series of 30 seconds videos that were assembled together to create a surreal film. Nobody knows what the other participants sent or what the final result will look like. To promote the film Ecuatorian designer and Poster Master Mario Fuentes created a whimsical poster that has been shared all over social media featuring everything from local celebrities to hard-core fans on top of a mountain holding the poster to show their support for the project. Coherent poster series for Cinedays 13

Cinedays is a Film Festival that celebrates the diversity of European cinema. It gives the public an opportunity to see projections of European cinematography, as well as to discover young talented European authors. For 13th edition of this event Miki Stefanoski from Macedonia created a series of coherent, subtle and a bit mysterious posters that share a common color palette. The effect is quite intriguing. The posters are part of a complete visual identity, which also includes, flyers, labels and tote bags. You can see the whole set here.

The Sunday Times Film and Screen Season posters

The Sunday Times campaign “Eyes”, prepared by Grey agency from London gives you an opportunity to see worlds and landscapes from iconic movies through eyes of movie heroes – you can, for example, watch the road to Las Vegas through Raoul Duke’s glasses, take a look on Tatooine planet as C-3PO from Star Wars or visit New York City as Spiderman. The motto of this campaign, which complements this coherent, minimalist series is See all from the inside.

Andrzej Krajewski’s posters – exhibition, book, work review

Andrzej Krajewski is a talented graphic designer, creator of posters and book covers, who has a characteristic, eye catching and well recognizable style, with richness of details and vibrant colors. His first poster came about in 1956 and he is still active today, creating  posters for a theater company in Poland as well as collector’s film posters. Currently there are two good and important opportunities to see his works: exhibition in Poster Museum (Wilanow, Poland) available till June 7th and the book with his works, entitled Moje okładki (En. Poster Boys – poster dialogues

Brandon Schaefer & Sam Smith aka the Poster Boys are the creators of a podcast about contemporary movie posters. Each Episode presents a selection of posters, links and resources, providing the audience with a rich and ever growing base for the study of contemporary poster design. If you like painted posters from the 80’s and 90’s, you will surely find something there as well.

Episode 1 is dedicated to the genius Saul Bass and uses Flat File as an excuse to discuss various international posters for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.

Episode 2 is about movie posters from 2014,  and an analyzis on the enigmatic posters for Stanley Kubrick’s The shining.

Episode 3  is dedicated to the work of Drew Struzan, the painter who created iconic posters for movies like “Back to the Future”, “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars”.

Oscars 2015 – artist poster series

The emotion of the Oscars is now starting to fade away. We now know the results, but not everyone had the opportunity to see this posters series created by 14 artists from various countries.

The motto of this series was “Imagine what’s possible”. Using different styles but consistent colors and the Oscar as a central point in the composition as a the recipe to create a coherent, pure and expressive collection, the artists put their minds to work. The posters chosen from this special set were made by Mogollon (United States), Blastto (Spain), Hattie Stewart (United Kingdom) Petra Borner (Sweden) and Steve Wilson (United Kingdom).
