A great use of Gestalt’s law of figure and ground can be seen in a series of posters from Ogilvy & Mather for Alcoholics Anonymous. The powerful posters show a person who has been separated from their friends, family or work due to their addiction. The abyss between them has the form of a bottle to illustrate how the desire for the bottle has distanced them from what they love.  The posters invite the people to “get back” by embracing recovery.
