Poster Monday: Shovels Up
The September’s last poster spot belongs to Savvas Theodosiou from Cyprus for his poster Shovels Up, he received a Bachelor degree in Multimedia and Graphic Design from Cyprus University of Technology, Savvas working at Think Positive Design Studio and worked on various projects as a freelancer. During his dissertation, developed ‘Contactive System’; a graphic design reading system for visually impaired people. He is highly interested in social design and activism in visual communication, as well as, how design can be used for inclusion, education and social awareness.
Shovels Up was first created as a contribution to the first Cyprus International Poster Triennial 2019, under the “borders” category. The poster is an answer to Trump’s Proposed Border Wall that, as he supports, it will control illegal immigration. How realistic is a solution to a problem if individuals are being treated like caged chickens? Can someone really coop up people who are chasing their dreams and they are fighting for their independence? Despite what we may think chickens are anything but silly. Research shows that they might be able to perform ‘mental time travel’. Therefore, even if people will be enclosed, any risk will be taken in order to free up themselves. If politicians build a large wall, plain humans can dig a large tunnel; in the exact same way that refugees in the Mediterranean inflated a boat. Shovels Up is the story of how chickens escaped from the coop, how human species caught their dreams and how love finally won the war; all visualized in a post-propagandic poster. SHOVELS UP!
