Poster Monday: The Wonderful World of Hugo Gernsback
For this Poster Monday we are featuring a poster from Thilo von Debschitz, a graphic designer from Wiesbaden, Germany. Thilo created the Hugo Gernsback poster together with Nils Bilse and Laurenz Nielbock. Nielbock and Debschitz founded the design studio Q in 1997, named after the creative helper of James Bond.
The poster entitled “The Wonderful World of Hugo Gernsback” was created to promote an exhibition on Hugo Gernsback, “Father of Science Fiction” in the Museum am Strom, Bingen, Germany. The original artwork appeared as a cover illustration for “Air Wonder Stories”, a science fiction pulp published in November of 1929. With permission of the illustrators grandson, they were able to use the image. During the digital retouching they kept all traces of the past such as cracks and wrinkles. The type was selected and manipulated to emphasize the “retro” impression, and even the demanded implementation of the logos of the museum and the City of Bingen do not distract from the poster’s striking impact.
