Poster Monday: The Horrors
The second Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to Robert Mirolo from Ireland for his poster entitled “The horrors”. Robert was born and raised in Dublin, he lives in a creaky old boat on the Northside of the city with ten cats and a murder of crows.
Robert makes music and made a lot of lifelong friends and contacts in the industry, he also illustrate books and editorials for press and occasionally toys and murals, lately he has been animating. The poster was designed for Tom Furst of The Horrors presentation in the Twisted Pepper in Dublin, “I wanted to capture some essence of the band without explicitly depicting them. Them, being from English and having a quintessentially British and 1980’s influenced sound evoked images of some downtime, a breakfast in a greasy spoon in London or Brighton, with small piles of lyric sheets and cigarettes, stopped off some morning, mid tour. There’s a kind of resigned Thatcherist melancholy, but also hope. And coffee.” comments Robert.
For producing the poster Robert scribbled out some type on the backs of old letters and sheets on his desk and scanned them in alongside some early sketches and scribbles of Tom Furst. He also used some simple geometric shapes and layer styles to create the rest of the contents of the table. But at first he tried doing a direct illustration of the band and it was going nowhere at all. “I got very fed up and was eventually convinced to go for a walk… I listened to the band and got weird flashbacks to the early 90s when I was a child and tried to think of the time I’d spent in the UK. Grot and eggs and ashtrays were what came to mind. Very British. Very Horrors. These images became the poster.” says Robert.
