Poster Monday: The Swing Kid
For the second Poster Monday we have a poster coming from Greece from Corn Studio entitled “The Swing Kid”. Corn Studio is an independent design studio based in Athens, Greece, providing outstanding work with custom design solutions. The seeds were planted in 2009, but it wasn’t till 2012 that it started operating as a full-scale design studio for clients in Greece and abroad. Since then, it is formed by Dimos Stathis, Andreas Xenoulis, Vassia Kalozoumi and Ilias Stathis; a creative team of open minded, design freaks with passion for creativity.
In the late 1930’s there was a new movement on the rise among the teenagers of Hamburg Germany. Its followers refused to join the Nazi youth organisation, the Hitler Jugend known as the H.J. They were obsessed by American movies, British Fashion and swing music. They called themselves Swing Kids. “The Swing Kid” was a Corn Studio submission to a poster exhibition named The Swing Project which was inspired by swing music & ink. Each designer or design studio that participated created a poster based on the swing dance, music, atmosphere or clothing.
“The exhibition took place on Athens in 2013, about a year after the country’s parliamentary elections in which, after many years, it was elected a fascist party. Taking advantage of this fact and the theme of the exhibition we wanted to design a poster against fascism. We stylised the figure of a trumpeter and we started making some sketches experimenting with typography.”
