Poster Monday: Ciudad con Personaje (City With Character)
For this Poster Monday spot we have a poster designed by Taber Calderon. He was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and studied in New York City where live and work as a graphic designer and design educator at the collegiate level. Taber won a few poster competitions in the school district and have been making posters ever since. “On a personal level it allows for my graphics to shout louder than my voice ever will. Posters are special because they are to designers what canvases are to painters. Posters are not art, they are a creative science built to sell or promote. I try to give porters artistic flare and qualities. When the viewer finds artistic value, then they live past communication and this aspect is very satisfying. On a commercial level it feels special to visualize a practical and common idea in an unexpected way” says Taber.
The poster “Ciudad con Personaje” (City With Character) was design for the contest for Madrid Grafica ’18. Ciudad Persona claims the city as a space for all. A place where everyone lives and where everyone can fit in, addressing the idea of the city as a place conducive to coexistence and the significance of human values, as an essential factor for social organization and an optimal space for life in common. The concept addresses the theme of the project in two ways – Copy and image. The copy is a play on words (in spanish) ciudad persona becomes Ciudad con Personaje (City With Character). This simple addition of word and letters allow the visual to be plainly understood. The collage ties into the copy by making a distinctive face out of discarded material which gives it original character. It addresses acceptance, individuality and differences as well as awareness of cities being human and how environmentally responsible we should be. Cities are not just roads and buildings – they are human. They are full of character and clean (or not) because of the population that inhabits them.
