Yixue Li (aka Ivy) is in our Poster Monday spot of the day with the poster “Grammatical Nonsense” She is a graphic and motion designer from China and based in New York, currently teaching at Parsons. Her design practice and research revolve around languages, linguistics, (mis)translations, and the gap between production and consumption. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a BFA from University of Southern California. Yixue has won awards or presented her works at organizations such as AIGA NY, TDC, RGD, Communication Arts, Graphis, New York Art Book Fair, and Tasmeem Doha Biennial Art and Design Conference.

“Colorless green ideas sleep furiously” is a sentence composed by American linguist Noam Chomsky in his 1957 book, Syntactic Structures, as an example of a sentence that is grammatically correct, but semantically nonsensical. This poster aims to convey a linguistic concept in a visual form, and to establish the relationship between verbal and visual languages. It reminds us to be cautious with things whose form overpowers its meaning.
