Poster Monday: Refugee

Today Poster Monday comes from Brasil, it belongs to Marcos Minini and its title is “Refugee” He studied Graphic Design at the Federal University of Paraná. Over the last 30 years worked at different advertising agencies and design studios, like senior designer, Master Comunicação (design creative director), Brainbox Branding 360 (associate creative director) and Aurora Branding (partner). Marcos is one of the founders of Clube de Criação do Paraná (Creative Club of Paraná) and Prodesign PR (Paraná Design Association) teach Poster Design and also run lectures and workshops on creativity. His posters published in several books around the world, 4 platinum prizes at Graphis Poster and several golds and silver awards at Graphis. His poster had been in several Biennials too, like Golden Bee, Warsaw Poster Biennial, BiCebé Bolivia, Poster Biennale Lublin, Ecuador Poster Bienal, Bienal del Cartel in México, Poster Fest Budapest, Shenzhen International Poster Festival among others.

In the world the refugee problem is growing, wars, violence, revolutions, droughts, economic crises and totalitarian governments cause more and more people to leave their place of origin in the most precarious conditions possible, many of them instead of to find the peace and tranquility they seek, they end up imprisoned in another country. In reality, in one way or another, they are prisoners of violence all their lives.

Poster Monday: Hope

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster from Selin Türkölmez Balkara from Istanbul, Turkey, for her poster “Hope”. Selin lives in Istanbul and studied Art Design Management at Yeditepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts. She worked as a Visual Manager within a graphic design department of a company and is currently studying in a graphic design master program. Selin also works as an academician at Yeditepe University in the Graphic Design Department.

In the early days of 2017, more than 200 refugees have died drowning when crossing over the Mediterranean Sea between Turkey and Greece or freezing to death in deadly weather conditions. They cross the sea in makeshift boats which they hoped would bring them to safety. “Hope” was a reaction to the refugees who drowned because of the bad conditions of those boats. “As a graphic designer we always need to express our opinions and feelings in social events and try to draw attention to the events to make a change”, says Selin.

Posters to Support Refugees

Many Americans and other people are fighting the U.S. administration’s anti-refugee policies. Designers also want to participate and make an impact. A group of recent visual communication graduates in Germany have gathered to make personalized posters of young refugees in order to combat the immigrant ban. Poster Monday: Refugees Have no Choice

Very sad news for refugees have covered the news this weekend, which is why our second Poster Monday spot of the year is more relevant than ever. The poster is entitled “Refugees have no choice” and was created by Xristos Stavrakas from Lefkas, Greece. Xristos has a Bachelor of Arts from I.E.K Delta and currently works in an advertising agency.

The poster “Refugees have no choice” is about the rights of refugees. These are people who are forced out of and chased away from their countries, needing to make a new beginning for themselves and their family. “I trust that with this project i can convince people to see the immigration problem more seriously” says Xristos.

Poster Monday: Well-Come

For the first Poster Monday of february we have a poster from Alessandro Pigoni from Milan, Italy with his poster Well-Come. Alessandro has a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design and graduated with honors from IED, Istituto Europeo di Design. He has participated in many national and international exhibitions, which include: Sonia Delaunay 130 International Poster Campaign, Blank Poster x [kɔn] Decay Exhibition and Ficciones Typografika.

For the poster Well-Come Alessandro started with a very simple concept: the hypocrisy of people. The poster was made during The Global Refugee Crisis Majid Abbasi poster workshop. Alessandro explains his concept: “This is the way in which European countries give the ‘welcome’ to refugees fleeing by war, deliberately misspelled the word ‘welcome’, to play with the double reading of the word well / hell. I felt that the word; ‘Hell-come’ has a very powerful meaning, a sort of ‘welcome to hell'”.

“I love doing posters and I think that poster design is one of the most pure form of graphic design. I like the idea that people are influenced and suggestionate by a lot of different stimuli and I like to try to write down those stimuli on posters” says Alessandro.

Takiru Poster Exhibition by Yossi Lemel

Passionate designer Yossi Lemel is once again bringing light to important social issues happening around the world. Last month he held an important exhibition about refugees rights at the Mediatheque Holon entitled Takiru – which in Hebrew translates to introduce, get to know, acknowledge, recognize or learn about. The exhibition is based on testimonies of refugees that escaped from Darfur, Sudan and Eritrea.

It is always great to see poster designers working to create awareness and make the world a better place. Yossi Lemel is not only a Poster Master, but he is undoubtedly a soul committed to social change. To learn more about this campaign and see some of the testimonies videos with the UNHCR’s Facebook page.
