Fairey posters removed from High School

Remember the “We the People” posters campaign from Shepard Fairey that he used to protest at the Woman’s March? They were hung up at Westminster High School and the Maryland High School in Carroll County, with the purpose of symbolising equality, but unfortunately not everyone felt the same way. Apparently, some people thought that the posters were meant to show an opposition against Trump’s campaign, that therefore they should be removed, since teachers shouldn’t influence the student’s political choices. The decision was taken even though it was clarified that this was not their intention. Instead students were allowed to wear them as t-shirts and bring them to school.

The calendar shows 1462 Trump faces representing each day of his presidential years. The poster doesn’t take sides, so whether you are happy about his election or against it, you can hang this calendar and have a blast with it. If you are a Trump follower, it is a 4 year calendar celebrating his presidency, and if you are against his ideals, this would be a great way to scratch his face every single day.

Poster Monday: Trump and Merkel

The Poster Monday spot of the day “Trump and Merkel”  belongs to Barbara Ehrbar and Matej Moravec. Barbara is a graphic designer born in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, she studied at Ecole Cantonal d’art de Lausanne and the School of Visual Arts NYC ; Matej was born in Prague CZ, and studied at Graphic School Prague and Academy of applied Art and Design; they both work on Superbüro, a graphic design studio that was founded in 2001 by Barbara, which focuses on designing books, catalogs, flyers, posters, magazines, brochures, logos and visual identities, websites, way finding systems, illustration and a lot more.

The poster “Trump and Merkel” contributed to the discussion on Donald Trump’s election and the future of the world. “The election of Donald Trump for president of the US shocked us. So we decided to express our thoughts in an illustration and print it as a poster. The poster was showed in the shop window of our studio. The Illustration is based on Donald Trumps «grab-them-by-the-pussy»-statement. Instead of the political handshake trump is grabbing Merkels pussy.” says Barbara.

The project will go on during the President’s first 100 days in office, creating a collection of 100 posters.

Shepard Fairey fights Trump with iconic posters

Shepard Fairey is a well known artist specially recognized by his HOPE poster for the Obama presidential campaign eight years ago. As a form of protest to President Trump’s inauguration day, Fairey decided to open his exhibition called “American Civics” in Los Angeles, California. In it, he presented a series of posters entitled “We the people”, where he compilates his HOPE poster technique to create three images portraying different women: a Latina, a Muslim American, and an African American.

The series was shown at the women’s march against Trump’s denigrating comments towards women as an opposition to Trump’s campaign where he stated his racism, sexism and Islamophobia believes. A great way to inspire and bring people together to fight for justice peacefully.

“Art has the potential to break through predisposition because it affects people emotionally, and it catalyzes conversations that wouldn’t happen otherwise,” Fairey said.

Op-ed Can Political Posters Still Make a Difference?

Last month AIGA published an interesting piece discussing the role of posters in the contemporary social media driven political scene. With the United States in the midst of the 2016 presidential election cycle, the article poses the question: how relevant is the humble political poster today?

From Warhol to Shepard Fairey, the piece discusses some of the most iconic political posters in history and moves on to address the challenges that the poster faces in a culture where people look down at a screen for information instead of up.
