Fairey posters removed from High School

Remember the “We the People” posters campaign from Shepard Fairey that he used to protest at the Woman’s March? They were hung up at Westminster High School and the Maryland High School in Carroll County, with the purpose of symbolising equality, but unfortunately not everyone felt the same way. Apparently, some people thought that the posters were meant to show an opposition against Trump’s campaign, that therefore they should be removed, since teachers shouldn’t influence the student’s political choices. The decision was taken even though it was clarified that this was not their intention. Instead students were allowed to wear them as t-shirts and bring them to school.

Shepard Fairey fights Trump with iconic posters

Shepard Fairey is a well known artist specially recognized by his HOPE poster for the Obama presidential campaign eight years ago. As a form of protest to President Trump’s inauguration day, Fairey decided to open his exhibition called “American Civics” in Los Angeles, California. In it, he presented a series of posters entitled “We the people”, where he compilates his HOPE poster technique to create three images portraying different women: a Latina, a Muslim American, and an African American.

The series was shown at the women’s march against Trump’s denigrating comments towards women as an opposition to Trump’s campaign where he stated his racism, sexism and Islamophobia believes. A great way to inspire and bring people together to fight for justice peacefully.

“Art has the potential to break through predisposition because it affects people emotionally, and it catalyzes conversations that wouldn’t happen otherwise,” Fairey said.

Op-ed Can Political Posters Still Make a Difference?

Last month AIGA published an interesting piece discussing the role of posters in the contemporary social media driven political scene. With the United States in the midst of the 2016 presidential election cycle, the article poses the question: how relevant is the humble political poster today?

From Warhol to Shepard Fairey, the piece discusses some of the most iconic political posters in history and moves on to address the challenges that the poster faces in a culture where people look down at a screen for information instead of up.

Honor the Treaties

Photographer Aaron Huey, started, in 2011 an incredible street art project, with artists Ernesto Yerena and Shepard Fairey. The project called: Honor the Treaties, is dedicated to raise awareness about the sad history of broken treaties between Indigenous Tribes and United States Government. Huey began the project with a photographic documentation about the Lakota people and the Pine Ridge Reservation in the Black Hills of South Daokta. Then, with the collaboration of Yerena and Fairey, they created images and spread them all over the web and cities as Seattle and New York. This activist artist ask the public to share this images looking to educate and build a community dedicated to justice and freedom.

Shepard Fairey designs Ai Weiwei Poster

The renowned and controversial graphic designer Shepard Fairey, known for creating the iconic 2008 “HOPE” campaign poster for President Barack Obama’s is back in the spotlight with another instantly identifiable image: Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei. Fairey’s newest poster shows Ai with a cut on the side of his head, a reference to an injury the artist suffered at the hands of Chinese police in 2010.

The striking orange, red, and black portrait was made in collaboration with Friends of Ai Weiwei, as a way to pressure the Chinese government into giving Ai his passport back. Ai, a political artist known for challenging authority and fighting for freedom of expression through minimalist artworks and internet activism, has been under house arrest since 2011. His passport is still in the possession of the Chinese authorities since it was confiscated that year. At artsy.net you can find more info about Ai Weiwei.

The bold portrait will be printed in a limited edition of 375, 100 of which will be donated to the Brooklyn Museum, which will present an Ai Weiwei retrospective exhibition, “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” from April 18 through August 10, 2014.
