Poster Monday: Read Changes the Way you Look

The second Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to Santiago Solís Montes de Oca from México for his poster entitled “Read changes the way you see”. Santiago was born in Mexico City and raised in Durango. He studied graphic design at the UAD and has a specialty in editorial design by EDINBA. He has been working since 2005 making books, posters and illustration for children and youth in his study Mano de Papel. Santisgos´s work has been published in Finland, Cuba, Korea, Belgium, Spain, Ukraine, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Russia, Germany, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Poland and Mexico.

The poster was designed as part of a collection that sought to promote reading. The piece reflects the vertigo that produces an immersive and engrossing narrative; that abyss where we are always welcome to drop into, with one condition: to share what the author speaks to us, and how it changes the way we see and interpret reality.

Santiago says “A good poster is a voice that adds to the everyday sounds of everyday life, if the poster achive the time for dialogue with the pedestrian, will live now as a question in your mind. Poster design is a way of thinking aloud”.

Poster Monday: The Metamorphosis

The featured poster in this first Poster Monday spot is The Metamorphosis, created by Miguel Ángel Rangel for the International Biennial of the Poster in Mexico. Kafka’s Metamorphosis is probably the best example of alienation made symbolic in literature. For Miguel it is “The vision that you have of yourself”.

Miguel was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. A graphic design student at the UASLP he is mainly focused on designing posters for social causes. His work has been selected in national and international competitions such as the International Poster Biennial of Mexico, the Poster Biennale in Italy, TodayPosters, Posterheroes well as in various group exhibitions.

For Miguel the poster can be a multitude of things depending on its use is given. From a game to a rebel scream. It can be the voice of a social cause or an individual opinion. The more complicated or more direct message metaphor. But it always has something to say.

Posters about the centenary of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

As part of the celebration of its 25th anniversary, the International Poster Biennial in Mexico (BICM) invited designers to participate in the exhibition The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, vestige of a restless sleep.

Kafka’s work reflects the climate that existed in central Europe in the period before World War II and still today continues to fascinate readers from the most diverse cultural circles worldwide, becoming at once, inspiration of countless literary and dramatic creative artists.

The opening will be held on October 26, 2015 at 19:30 in the Gallery Manuel Felguérez of the Autonomous Metropolitan University (Prol. Canal de Miramontes Rectory PB 3855, Col. Ex Hacienda de San Juan de God, CP 14387, Tlalpan, Mexico City).

Admission is free.

Poster Monday: Luck is for those who read

For this second Poster Monday spot we have a poster entitled “Luck is for those who read” created by Elizabeth Roman from México. Eli is originally from Durango, México where she studied Graphic Design. She placed 1st on the Olympus CEV Madrid competition and received a scholarship to study photography in Madrid. She has worked for educational and government institutions as well as independently. Some of her works have been exhibited collectively in Mexico, Italy, Japan, Germany, Venezuela and the USA

The poster “Luck is for those who read” would have us think through a visual metaphor that reading is a valuable marker of maturity to build an intelligent environment that prepares us for life and helps us attract good opportunities; it is no coincidence that many of the nations that lead the top of readers have an outstanding economic growth.

Eli tells us “I enjoy the challenge of modeling ideas and concepts using objects and materials, is a constant theme in my posters, the process to run is often uncertain which makes it very exciting”.

Poster Monday: The Truth is not Killed by Killing Journalists

The last Poster Monday spot for the day is for Jorge Matías Garnica and his sad poster entitled No se mata la verdad matando periodistas (The Truth is not Killed by Killing Journalists). On July 31, 2015, four women and one man (an activist and photojournalist among them) were tortured and killed by coup de grace in an apartment in Mexico City. Within this context, the concept of this poster is that in Mexico the freedom of expression is a high risk activity: speaking, writing and even photographing the violence and corruption, is paid with life.

This poster seeks to denounce political repression and censorship against freedom of expression in Mexico, condemning censorship and violence, while serving as a graphic memory of this tragic event. The poster is part of Imágenes en Voz Alta (Images Outloud), a bank of free and royalty free images that can be shared freely in social networks and electronic or print media, as well as be downloaded in high quality format to be printed, distributed and used in individual or collective manifestations.

Jorge Matías Garnica was born and raised in Puebla, Mexico. He studied graphic design at the Autonomous University of Puebla. In 2006 moved to Mexico City to work in The Time Machine, then the study of Alejandro Magallanes. His worrk is focused mainly on designing book covers for Grupo Santillana, Editorial Planeta, Random House Penguin, Editorial Ocean, McGraw-Hill, among others. Jorge shares with us his view of design: “Designers are translators of oral and written language graphic-symbolic language as well as writers and poets, we may have the ability to modify and adapt the language to create new concepts”. He is currently studying philosophy as a second career and on this note he says: “I have noticed that I know nothing”.

V Poster Forum in Mexico

A couple of weeks ago The 5th Poster Forum took place at the CUAAD in the University of Guadalajara. This event was organized by Issac Cortés with the support of the Academia de Diseño II Cartel (Gabriel Grover, Marco Aquiles, Ricardo Gómez, Tonatihu Hernández, Carlos Carrillo, Eduardo Castillo, Alfredo Reza, Eduardo Galindo) and the assistance of León Cortes. The poster forum was a day for conferences about poster design. Andrés Pérez spoke about photographs and expanded posters, using the work of Morelos as an example. Francisco talked about image quality and photographic printing techniques. Gus Morainslie presented the conference “Design and Social Responsibility and Moisés Romero the one entitled “The image maker”.

As part of this event, the 1st international seminar of the poster took place from March 17th to the 19th, and involved a series of workshops about poster design. The workshop with Andrés Pérez involved painting with light and making posters with studio photography of found objects. The workshop with Gus Morainslie focused on social issues and taking a critical stand as a designer and the workshops with Moisés Romero addressed the complexities of making posters for competitions, taking the Italian Biennale, Segunda Llamada and Poster for Tomorrow as case studies.

The participants of the workshops expressed their delight, not only about the event, but about the beautiful location, that overlooked a natural canyon, providing the attendees with a magnificent view.

Last week was the opening of the Tributo 50 Años de Mafalda exhibition at the Museo Imagina in the city of Puebla, Mexico. The collection features over 50 posters from some of the most talented poster designers in the world such as Sergio Grande, Juan Madriz, Max Rompo and many more. The event was organised by Kaled Avila and Luis Antonio Rivera.

Highlights from the 13 BICM Mexico Poster Biennial

The 13th edition of Mexico´s International Poster Biennial (BICM) took place from October 27th to November 2nd in Mexico City and Morelia.

Winning posters announcement and opening exhibition was held at the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City. Jury members (Nelu Wolfensohn-Quebec, Arnulfo Aquino-Mexico, Antonio Castro-USA, Ronald Curchod-Switzerland, Mark Gowing-Australia, Laura Llópiz-Cuba, Sophia Shin-Taiwan and Parisa Tashakori-Iran) chose this year’s winning posters which you can view here.

Afterwards, 19 Workshops, 19 lectures and 15 exhibitions from some of the world´s best designers took place in the beautiful colonial city of Morelia at par with the breathtaking celebrations of the mexican tradition “Día de muertos” (Day of the dead); a perfect date to be in Mexico for all the international attendees!

So many great activities happen at the same time, it makes it difficult to get a glimpse of all of them at once, so we chose some of the highlights from our attending team member Gus Moraislie:

Workshop by Diego “Yayo” Herrera from Colombia. His graphic quality and humour were simply amazing; worth mentioning he is one of the nicest persons in the world!

Fernando Rueda lecture about Puppets. Closing the event with funny video interventions and a play with all the puppets made by his students during the workshops.

Night of the death in UNLA University: Altars, traditional food, regional dances, prehispanic rituals, performances and great costumes.

Finally, Gus says: “Last but not least what I love about attending BICM and all the great Poster Biennials is the opportunity to meet new friends and reunite with old ones. A lot of the learning takes place on the lectures and workshops; but outside, enjoying a meal, a coffee or a beer friendships and new poster projects are truly nurtured”.

Nuevas Gráficas exhibition in Monterrey

Since July 17th the exhibition “Nuevas Gráficas” (New graphics) has been exhibited inside Fundidora Park, one of the greatest venues in Monterrey, Mexico. The exhibition, curated by Luis Lizaola (aka Razor Master Printer), features the winning posters from the Segunda llamada 2013 competition (with the topic of Responsible handling of plastic waste), a sample of posters from Mexico city´s reknown silkscreen printing studio Color 75 grados, posters from local Monterrey artists, T-shirts printed by Razor Master printer, Stencil work by Simon Barsiniestro and last but not least Comic artwork by one of Mexico´s top artists: Edgar Clement.

Parallel to the exhibition and for more than 2 months different graphic design workshops, lectures and live silkscreen printings were held by the exhibition participants in Graficante gallery and the arts school Adolfo Prieto. Due to its great success, Nuevas Gráficas will be a yearly event featuring the best of graphic arts from Monterrey, Mexico and various other countries in upcoming years. The exhibition closes next week on September 30th, so if you haven’t already, make sure you check it out!
