Exhibition: National Theatre Posters
An amazing poster exhibition is currently happening in the Wolfson Gallery at the National Theatre. Curated by design critic and writer Rick Poynor, this show explores the evolution of beautiful poster designs that were used for the National Theatre since 1963. The exhibition contains modern and classic examples of theatre poster design and displays work from artists such as Ken Briggs, Richard Bird, Michael Mayhew, Charlotte Wilkinson and current Creative Director Ollie Winser and the Graphic Design team.

Exhibition: We the People

We the People Poster Exhibition
Twelve very influential and prominent designers are currently displaying their artworks in an important poster exhibition that celebrates Constitution Day in America. We The People was organized by ThoughtMatter, Mirko Ilic and The Constitutional Resources Center. The show features work from designers including Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, and Jessica Hische. All artists involved created posters about the American Constitution’s Preamble or one of the amendments that form the Bill of Rights. The works can be seen until Sept. 30, 2017, at The Cooper Union Gallery in New York.

Pop-Up Exhibition: Gone Tomorrow
New York City is a vibrant cultural hub that has a great history with the creation of amazing posters. In 2018 the city will now have a museum dedicated specifically to poster design called Poster House. Poster House aims to present the culture, design, and impact of posters in both historical and contemporary visual communication. On September 20th they will be hosting a pop-up exhibition that features posters from iconic venues and cult events that were an important part of the city’s history.

Exhibition: It’s Alive!

It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection
Kirk Hammett, famous as the lead guitarist for the band Metallica, has organized an exhibition of his classic collection of horror and sci-fi movie posters. The show displays 135 works from 20th century cinema, including original posters, costumes, props and guitars. Kirk has spent decades amassing these rare and beautiful artworks that capture the evolution of poster design in film. The exhibition can be seen at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.

Hollywood in Havana: Five Decades of Cuban Posters Promoting U.S. Films
The Pasadena Museum of California Art will be hosting an exhibition with an incredible collection of Cuban film posters. Hollywood in Havana: Five Decades of Cuban Posters Promoting U.S. Films, displays posters that were part of an initiative of the revolutionary government to develop cultural awareness after the end of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry produced the posters that were created by designers between 1960-2009. These unique posters offer a great way to experience how Hollywood movies were interpreted in the Cuban culture.

Exhibition: Can graphic design save lives?

Can graphic design save lives?
An exhibition will be taking place this Sept. which focuses on the role that graphic design can play in saving lives. The show will take place at Wellcome Collection in London, England, and features 200 examples of work that includes hard-hitting posters, street art, packaging and medical designs. The exhibition examines how graphic design has constructed and communicated healthcare messages to inform the public and persuade society. The show features works from influential designers from the 20th century and figures currently working in the field. Some of the artwork shown will include an interactive poster installation from Brazil that was created in response to the Zika virus, anti-malaria posters from the second world war, campaigns regarding AIDS, and Italian “plague notices” from 1681. The exhibition has been organized by Rebecca Wright and graphic designer Lucienne Roberts.

A poster campaign is underway in Venezuela with the aim to protest for the country to achieve restoration of freedom and democracy. The digital campaign entitled Posters for Democracy in Venezuela is a compilation of protest art and political posters submitted by many artists. These powerful images capture the volatile political situation that the country is currently facing. The social and economic turmoil in Venezuela has created a shift where democratic institutions are eroding while authoritarian politics seeks to rewrite the country’s constitution. These political posters reflect the situation Venezuelans are facing and the organizers aim to spread their messages internationally.

Exhibition: Art of (anti) Corruption

Art of (anti) Corruption
A very interesting anti-corruption campaign is happening in the country of Armenia. Through a series of events and activities spanning a year, the Art of (anti) Corruption aims to create awareness, educate, and shine a creative light on the effects of corruption on Armenian society and beyond. For this campaign a special poster art competition and exhibition has been organized and will be displayed this Sept/Oct. The jury for the poster contest features artists, corruption experts, politicians, media, and NGOs. Other events included in the campaign involve stand up comedy, TEDx talks, and comics. Through the use of creativity and cultural interpretations of corruption in Armenia, the campaign seeks to educate citizens about their rights and to change the perception that corruption is inevitable.

Exhibition: Art of Reggae

Art of Reggae Exhibition
For the first time, winners from the 5th International Reggae Poster Contest will be exhibiting their posters in the Ostroda Reggae Festival this August in Poland. The Art of Reggae Exhibition features 40 reggae-inspired posters that were created by artists from across the globe. This show will be a celebration of reggae music reflected through the vibrant works of design and illustration. All of the posters were carefully selected from the 2016 International Reggae Poster Contest that had nearly 7000 poster entries for the competition. The aim of the poster contest is to build awareness about reggae music, and to establish a world-class “Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and Performance Centre” in Kingston, Jamaica. It also strives to help raise global awareness for Alpha Boys’ School, an institution for underprivileged youths in Kingston, Jamaica. The exhibition will take place on Friday 11th August at the Chamber Room of the Ostróda Amphitheatre.

If you love rock music, be sure to see the art exhibition True Faith currently happening at the Manchester Art Gallery. This terrific show explores the visual art legacy that formed from the music of Joy Division and New Order. The exhibition contains artwork spanning decades and includes poster designs from Peter Saville, Barbara Kruger, Slater Bradley, Scott King, Matthew Brannon and Jon Savage. The show explores music in the form of posters, cover designs, film, fashion, and music videos that were inspired by two of Manchester’s most influential bands.
