Exhibition: Underground Images

Exhibition: Underground Images
A very unique poster exhibition that has been touring the world has now arrived in the Netherlands. Underground Images brings together the work of some of the world’s best designers created at SVA for display in the New York City subway system.

SVA has been using alternative marketing strategies since the mid-1950’s to attract new students and took advantage of the New York subway system to showcase powerful and thought-provoking posters. Over the years designers such as Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser and George Tscherny have featured their posters as part of this campaign. Currently, a collection of these amazing posters has arrived in the Netherlands and can be seen underground at 3sec Gallery and De Affiche Galerij in Holland.

International Biennial Poster Design Terras Gauda

International Biennial Poster Design Terras Gauda
The International Biennial Poster Design Terras Gauda is one of the three most prestigious graphic design competitions in the world, and has announced its awards after the jury evaluated 1,568 original entries from 62 countries. Since 2001, more
than 17,000 posters have entered the competition.

The four awarded posters form part of the 40 finalists selected by the panel of judges at their meeting on October 27, with participants from Andorra, Poland, Italy, Germany, Israel, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Estonia, Slovakia, United States, Romania, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain. Pepe Gimeno, a graphic and type designer, was the leading professional on the panel of judges, which evaluated the 1,568 original entries from 62 countries that participated in the Biennial competition.

This year’s Biennial winners are:

1st Prize – UNITED BY, graphic design studio from Portugal, founded by
Miguel Palmeiro, National Prize for Design 2009 winner

1st Runner-up – MONIKA PRUS, designer from Poland

2nd Runner-up – JOAO MACHADO (Portugal), Icograda Excellence Award
winner and nominated for Graphis Design Master.

Honorable Mention – FERNANDO PINTEÑO, Spanish designer, two times
finalist in the Biennial Poster Design Terras Gauda

Mykola Kovalenko exhibition: Poster, Poster, Poster
In the country of Slovakia a powerful poster exhibition was recently shown at Open Gallery. The Poster, Poster, Poster exhibition is a collection of minimalist posters from graphic designer and art director Mykola Kovalenko.

Mykola currently works in Slovakia but is from the country of Ukraine. He is the founder of DNK Studio, and has done work for some of the top design agencies in his career. He has been a jury member of various advertising and design festivals and has been the winner of international festivals such as the Lahti Poster Triennial, Poster Quadrennial Bardejov, Golden Bee (Moscow), and the Ecuador Poster Bienal. Mykola is also a Member of the Ukrainian Union of Designers, a member of the Graphic Designers Association «4th Block», and is  an Honorary Member of the Art Directors Club Ukraine.

Speak Up Poster! International Invitational Poster Exhibition
A fantastic exhibition taking place in Córdoba, Veracruz, has invited talented designers from all over the world to participate in an a series of exhibitions that will begin in Mexico and travel to different countries around the world. The Speak Up Poster! International Invitational Poster Exhibition is a collective of designers and illustrators founded and directed by graphic designer Luis Yáñez with which it seeks to promote social mobility in all areas of society. The project is an initiative when contacts are made with designers and illustrators from other parts of the world with the same social concerns.

The first exhibition presents 38 posters by 35 designers from 18 countries with the theme “DANGEROUS WORLD NOW, A BETTER WORLD TOMORROW”.
The complete collection is composed of 65 posters from 30 countries and will be presented in the month of October at the World Congress of Visual Communication of the Ecuador Poster Bienal 2018 in the city of Quito, Ecuador. Likewise, the catalog will be presented and the new call will be launched.

The cultural center SESC Pompéia in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently exhibiting the poster designs of Bulgarian-born designer Luba Lukova. Her current exhibition Luba Lukova: Posters for the Living Theatre in São Paulo, Brazil is a collection of Luba Lukova’s posters created for the legendary Living Theatre.

Luba is an internationally recognized designer who is currently living in New York. Luba creates powerful poster designs that are thought-provoking and graphic which reflect the human condition, fundamental fairness and justice. Luba Lukova’s current exhibition can be seen until Jan. 31, 2018.

Exhibitions: International Reggae Poster Contest

International Reggae Poster Contest
The International Reggae Poster Contest is organizing two great exhibitions that will feature winning reggae-inspired posters from their 2016 competition. The Art of Reggae Exhibition is being held in the departures terminal at the Sangster International Airport in Jamaica. The display will feature 100 posters from the annual contest. The Freestylee Roots exhibition will be the second organized event taking place at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. This show will feature politically engaged posters from Michael Thompson who was the co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest.

The 2016 International Reggae Poster Contest that had 1270 entries submitted by 748 graphic designers from 75 nations. The aim of the poster competition is to build awareness about reggae music, and to establish a world-class “Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and Performance Centre” in Kingston, Jamaica. It also strives to help raise global awareness for Alpha Boys’ School, an institution for underprivileged youths in Kingston, Jamaica.

We are happy to share with you some very exciting news in the world of posters. The Ecuador Poster Bienal is currently exhibiting a selection of amazing posters in the country of China. The show has been carefully organized and curated by an international group of designers and educators. Some of the very best posters that were selected for the Ecuador Poster Bienal will be on display at the Vanke Canal Bund Art Museum in Wuxi, China. It is also worth noting that China has been an invited country to participate in the upcoming 2018 Ecuador Poster Bienal. The exhibition can be seen until Oct. 29th, 2017.

Poster Girls – a century of art and design
For over a century, London’s transport system has been branded by poster designs from talented artists. Many of these fantastic designs which influenced the public were created by women, but the identity of the artists would often remain hidden. Currently, the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is displaying an exhibition that will bring the work of these talented female artists to life once again. Poster Girls is a powerful exhibition that shines a spotlight on female graphic designers and the influence they have made in poster design over the last century. The show features over 150 posters and original art that will be displayed in a chronological approach, capturing the progression of design over the decades.
