Poster Collection 25, Josef Müller-Brockmann

Josef Müller-Brockmann’s posters from the 1950s left a mark on Swiss visual communication. His work demonstrates the efficiency of the use of a simple and formal language to create a universal timeless message. He also created poster campaigns using exciting and dynamic compositions for clients such as the Tonhalle concert Hall in Zürich and the Automobile Club of Switzerland.

The book by Lars Müller Publishers, presents a poster collection and places the images in their context to examine the validity of Müller-Brockmann’s design solutions from today’s point of view. The book is available in English and German.

A new book about Bollywood Posters

Since its inception in the second decade of the 20th century, the Bombay-based Indian film industry—Bollywood—has developed a unique visual language, articulated by the vivid hand-painted movie posters that have since become highly-desirable collectors’ items. While Bollywood poster artists produced a staggering number of these hand-painted images, their ephemeral work has traditionally been presented unevenly, with shoddy reprints and re-release posters. Taschen’s new book The Art of Bollywood, is a lovingly curated tribute of the vibrant graphic tradition of this culture, featuring original art including rare posters, street publicity and cinema displays as well as artist biographies and a breakdown of their working methods. Book: Rise and Fall of the Poster

Published in 2006 this book was one of the first to address the relevance of the poster as a medium within the climate of ever-evolving electronic communication. The authors pose the question: Is the traditional democracy and accessibility of the public poster still relevant, when contrasted with the closely targeted audience of the electronic media?

Written by Malcolm Frost, the book includes contributions by  Aidan Winterburn, Angharad Lewis, Massimo Vignelli, Catherine Slessor and Bob Gill. The history of the poster and contemporary approaches are discussed, as well as poster-specific graphics, illustration, photography and typography. More than 100 posters are presented, each with an illuminating discussion of the problem, solution, background, budget and mechanical details. Good50x70 ANTHOLOGY Book

A social communication project presented through 930 posters by graphic artists from around the world on subjects such as global warming, human rights, sexually transmitted diseases and other important social issues, created for various NGOs, charities, institutions and social volunteering organizations (including Amref, Amnesty International and Greenpeace) and collected by the Cultural Association Good Design.

This anthology tells the history of the project – started in 2007 – through all the posters selected by an international jury of renowned graphic designers, including Massimo Vignelli and Alain Le Quernec, together with original texts and an illustrated account of the initiative.

A reference book for whoever searches for a source for the communication of social causes, backed up by an online database with all 10,000 entries, and an inspiration for graphic studios and young graphic designers.
