The Poster: A visual history

The Poster, a visual history is a book edited by Gill Saunders and Margaret Timmers that brings together over 300 examples of poster design and the various ways the medium has been used to throughout time. Organized into seven thematic chapters, each poster is accompanied by a concise commentary that explains the work in terms of its design, printing, content, message, and the commercial, social or political impact it may have had.

Published in association with the V&A the book is available at thamesandhudson.com. A must-have visual resource for graphic designers and illustrators, and anyone with an interest in collecting posters and understanding more of our social history through art.

Posters of the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Browsing around the internet we found a collection of vintage posters celebrating 24 Hours of Le Mans, the oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, which has been held each year since 1923 near the town of Le Mans in France. The posters are from the 50s and 60s and feature a powerful color palette accompanied by a simple use of type. The posters from 1957 & 1959 are our personal favorites. Which ones are yours?

The poster´s place on the world

Elizabeth Guffey, Professor of Art & Design History, State University of New York at Purchase, is the author of Retro: The Culture of Revival (Reaktion Books, 2006), editor of the journal Design and Culture (Bloomsbury) and her latest book is Posters: A Global History (Reaktion Books, 2015). The latter is a serious analysis of the poster phenomenon that addresses the past and future of a venerable form.

DIFF Poster

This year, the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) commemorates its 35th edition announcing a Festival Poster Retrospective Exhibition presented at the KZNSA gallery cafe.

Since 1979, this festival has grown; today, it is considered a premiere event on the cultural calendar of the City of Durban and across the world. According with this long timeline, this year, Wesley Van Eeden created a poster that narrates with a graphic journey, the history of the festival.

For the first time in history, all festival posters are been display together from July 17 until the 27th, 2014. You can go see the exhibit free Tuesday to Friday, unless during short film screenings, but it will be worth it watch the film and then the exhibit. Book: Rise and Fall of the Poster

Published in 2006 this book was one of the first to address the relevance of the poster as a medium within the climate of ever-evolving electronic communication. The authors pose the question: Is the traditional democracy and accessibility of the public poster still relevant, when contrasted with the closely targeted audience of the electronic media?

Written by Malcolm Frost, the book includes contributions by  Aidan Winterburn, Angharad Lewis, Massimo Vignelli, Catherine Slessor and Bob Gill. The history of the poster and contemporary approaches are discussed, as well as poster-specific graphics, illustration, photography and typography. More than 100 posters are presented, each with an illuminating discussion of the problem, solution, background, budget and mechanical details.
