Poster Monday: Conversation

The first Poster Monday of February is “Conversation” designed by Goyen Chen, born in Taichung, Taiwan, specializing in graphic design. Graduated with a PhD in Digital Media Design from Asia University, his work has been exhibited in 35 countries in the past almost two years.

“The intention of this poster is to reflect on the way people talk to each other today. We all tend to resent people who disagree with us, so conversations can easily turn violent, like a gun that is just one hand away from being loaded and the trigger pulled. Because I feel so strongly about the proliferation of gun violence in our society, I just want to make it clear that the root of the violence problem is really more about communication and not taking action and never creating an irreversible situation, and once you do take action, it’s out of control. I am passionate about creating posters, hoping to replace language barriers with images so that we can communicate without barriers around the world” tell us Goyen

Poster Monday: War Only Brings Pain

For this new edition of Poster Monday we have a poster from the talented Goyen Chen from Taichung, Taiwan. He has a PhD in Digital Media Design from Asia University and have won 30 national design awards in just one year since started submitting posters to competitions last year. Currently teaching computer graphics, design thinking and audiovisual editing in a university course.

“The poster “War Only Brings Pain” mainly wants to express, for those who start a war, and then decide to start a war at the moment, the pain will come with it. I believe my poster appeals to the public in the simplest and clearest way possible that war only brings pain, and no matter who wins or loses today, there will be some painful losses. I hope that the leaders of all countries will think seriously before starting a war, we all live on the same land.

I created this poster at the end of May this year, when the war between Russia and Ukraine was going on. I wanted to use my small power to let everyone know that no matter what conflict we face today, the people who use violence are absolutely to blame for everyone’s suffering” tell us Goyen.

POSTER MONDAY: Tradition & innovation

Another week goes by and another Poster Monday arrives. This spot belongs to Lin Hung Chang from Taipei, Taiwan, he is a creative designer who is keen on graphic design and a university professor, and has served as a number of poster reviewers. His poster design works have won awards in many competitions and have been invited to nearly 100 professional exhibitions at home and abroad, and have been selected as one of the top 100 visual outstanding designers in Taiwan, the Graphis Protest Posters 2 Gold Award/Silver Award in the United States, and the Poster Stellars Poster Design Competition in the United States/full audience. Award, Golden Pin Design Award/Best Design of the Year and other international awards.

“Peking Opera is the quintessence of Chinese culture and art. It refines, exaggerates, beautifies, and adorns the forms, languages, and movements in life to form a special means of expression, which is reflected in the performance. Therefore, in the visual communication design, we also hope to break through the traditional presentation methods in terms of techniques, and integrate modern lines and colors into an innovative visual composition, which will become more interesting and differentiated” tell us Lin Hung Chang.

Poster Monday: D&AD in Taiwan

Ken-tsai Lee an associate professor in the design department of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan Tech, He have introduced the TDC NY exhibition to Taiwan for since 2009. At the same time, planned the Chinese Typography design exhibition, collecting design works from Japan and the Chinese speaking area, not only exhibited in Taiwan, but also exported to Singapore, exhibited in Singapore Design Center.

This is the first time to introduce the British D&AD exhibition to Taiwan. For the past ten years or so, the posters for these exhibitions have been done by Ken-tsai Lee. This was first time he carried the role as creative director and Art director, gave idea to my student-Du Haowei, directed him how to make the posters for the exhibition. D&AD new blood awards workshop and exhibition in 29.Dec. the poster series designed to promote the event.

For last april’s Poster Monday spot we are featuring a poster designed by Chun-Ta, born in 1990, is a skilled and creative graphic designer based in Taipei. The memorial poster is designed with the perspective from Taiwan. In Taiwan, the image of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen is applied to the design of NT 100 note, which is used most widely. As time goes by, modern people usually connect Dr. Sun Yat-Sen with the notes. Therefore, the image of note is used as the topic of the poster, constructed with geometric shapes in salute to his eleven times of democracy revolutions. The poster is not only for memory but also try to arise viewers’ reflection upon the influence brought from historical figures and what it left now.

Apart from his design proficiency, Chun-Ta is also an experienced instructor, contributing practical knowledge as collaborative teacher in colleges, participating in several sharing and workshops.

With the rapid evolvement of the internet, people’s cognition and understanding of various viewpoints have become more polarized. Due to the revolution of information transmission, influencers dominate all sorts of ideologies. Filter bubbles constrain people’s perspectives and make people more unitary and assertive. Groups hold divergent attitude cannot accommodate dissenting voices, which may easily lead to binary opposition. Except for the hostile between the polarization of society, the middle group will suffer more persecution. It will cause hurt and frustration. “The concept made me relate to the chessboard, which has a clear distinction between black and white. I consolidated this imagery with the concept and transformed it into directional trapezoids. Black and white areas are representing the concept of binary opposition. The triangular areas stand for the middle group. I fragmented a part of trapezoids to create a rhythmically visual effect” tell us Chun-Ta.

Exhibition: Sha Feng

Sha Feng Poster Exhibition
The poster designs of Sha Feng are graphic, beautiful and powerful. Born in China in 1988, Sha Feng has produced a stunning collection of work that has been featured in many poster exhibitions around the world. He has been a jury member for exhibitions such as the 2016 Ecuador Poster Bienal, the 2016 A’ Design Award, and the 2013 French “Poster for Tomorrow International Poster Festival”.

Currently, Sha Feng is exhibiting a solo show of his personal work in Taiwan. A collection of 45 posters created by the artist are being shown at the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences Art Center. The exhibition was curated by Chen Yu-Ming and Zeng Huai-Kuan. This event is a great opportunity for the public to see a unique show which captures the importance and beauty of poster design. The event opened on June 2nd and will be available to see until June 30th, 2017.
