For this Monday poster we have a great poster and at the same time a tribute to Ernesto Herrera, co-founder of GIFF (Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico) and art director who, together with Horax and Izdení, conceived the poster for GIFF 2020 that today we featuring. Ernesto Herrera fell ill of COVID and passed away in February. On September 17, 2021, GIFF XXIV was inaugurated, as a tribute to his life, which we join with this post.
Ernesto was a designer, photographer and set designer, he was in charge of the image of Social Communication of the State of Guanajuato and artistic director of GIFF with his work he managed to consolidate one of the most important film forums in the country. Izdení Esquivel was born in Irapuato Mexico, she studied Interior Design and a Master of Arts from the University of Guanajuato. Professionally, Izdení is dedicated to making virtual images (renders) for architectural projects and works as a graphic designer as a parallel activity. Horacio Hernández Galván aka Horax, is a graphic designer graduated from the Universidad de la Salle Bajío, illustrator and animator with more than 30 years publishing political cartoons in In 1998 he founded Grupo EsComic !, a company dedicated to the design and generator of printed and animated material for entertainment, advertising and educational purposes; participates in the design of characters for the TVAZTECA series “DESCONTROL” (2002), and in animated films such as“LA LEGENDA DE LA NAHUALA” (2007),“NIKTÉ” (2009), “LA REVOLUCIÓN DE JUAN ESCOPETA” (2011 ) and “EL AMERICANO” (2016)different information media, such as Milenio Diario, magazine 012, El Chamuco, among others.
About the poster GIFF 23 Horax tell us: “In that first week of January we had already made the sketches of a new city where the main buildings of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende were merged into a composition.
To achieve the three-dimensional layout, I invited Izdení to participate and thanks to her it was possible to give an architectural finish to that first poster of GIFF XXIII. Ernesto takes the illustration and adds the blue and orange colors (the golden sunsets of Guanajuato) and does the magic of it to develop the image of the event. Unfortunately the pandemic arrived, and the event that had to take place in July was postponed until September. In June he wrote to me to warn me of the turn in the image of the event and the plastic to use would be that of RETROFUTURE: a vintage style of science fiction cinema from the 50’s in high contrast, with planets, flying cars, the city of Guanajuato-San Miguel in the background, and in the foreground, a girl with a space helmet (to protect herself from the virus) looking into the distance and at the same time, the GIFF logo.
This plastic is taken because many of the film screenings would be made in drive-ins, as was done in the middle of the last century and a large part of the proposal would also be made in digital and virtual media, the future of festivals. Hence the RETROFUTURE theme.
“The poster is an invitation to get in a car and fly towards a cinema experience as in other times, as in these times” tell us Izdení.
