Poster Monday: Stop Trans Murders

The Poster Monday spot of the day is entitled “Stop Trans Murders” and was designed by Ugur Demirci. Ugur was born and lives in İstanbul where he works as artist and designer. He studied graphic design in high school and at Yeditepe University. He also works for some advertising agencies.

For this project Ugur wanted to raise awareness about violence towards transgendered people in Turkey. Turkey is ranked 1st in Europe and 9th in the world for number of transgender people murders. Between January 2008 and April 2016, forty three innocent transgendered people were murdered in Turkey. In 2016 a mutilated and burned body was found in an upscale residential area in Istanbul. It was revealed to be Hande Kader, a 23-year-old transgender woman and well-known LGBTQ activist. Ugur has done a great job on his poster on behalf of transgendered people.

Poster Monday “Improper Necklace”

The Poster Monday spot of the day goes to Esin Karabenli for the poster “Improper Necklace.” Esin is a student at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey, and works as freelance comic book artist and illustrator who works with different techniques and styles.

This poster presents a view to a great world problem, “passive violence” against women. A society that sees a beautiful woman only as an object is an example of this type of violence against women. “I wanted my poster to show classic magazine advertising: red lips, smooth white skin, a reference to new fashion and “vampirish beauty,” but at the neck there is no a necklace and in its place are a man’s hands. This represents all the society’s beauty standards with cosmetics, jewelry and uncomfortable clothes women try to fit int0. We don’t need any of them!” says Esin.

Poster Monday: New American Dream

The Poster Monday spot of the day “New American Dream” belongs to Derya Didem Kundakçı from Antalya, Turkey. Derya lives in Istanbul and is studying graphic design at Yeditepe University while working as a freelancer. Derya has been interested in art since she was a child.  She loves reading, and travels to fuel her creativity and transpose her experience into her works.

On January 30th 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to keep refugees from entering the country for 120 days. Under the order, immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim nations cannot enter the U.S. for three months. The poster “New American Dream” speaks out against this blatant discrimination against Muslim countries and the proposed wall between Mexico and the U.S. “I live in a Muslim country and this situation is against equality and it disturbs me.  I wanted to show people in the world how Donald Trump misuses power.” says Derya.

Poster Monday “Traffic Safety”

The second Poster Monday spot belongs to Çağdaş İnci from Turkey for his poster entitled “Traffic Safety”. Çağdaş was born in İzmir, Turkey; graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Department of Painting Teaching. Today, he evaluates ideas in advertising agencies as an art director. His poster work has a lot of awards and certificates worldwide, “Graphic design is my life” says Çağdaş.

The “Traffic Safety” poster was designed to draw attention, to compare the speed of a bullet with the speed of cars. There are so many deaths caused by speed exceeding, drivers should drive cautiously and within the allowed speed range. He wants to get people’s attention and warn them, to make them understand the main idea: obeying the rules of transit is saving their own lives.

Poster Monday: The Present

The Poster Monday spot of the day goes to Göksu Ilgaz Koçakcıgil from Turkey for her poster entitled “The Present”. Göksu was born in Istanbul, Turkey. She moved to California right after high school to pursue an education and career in graphic design. Her focus was going to be on posters but she also wanted to learn everything about art in general. “I can feel that there is a long path in front of me in the design industry. One thing I know is that I want to end up doing posters, hundreds of them! The combination of traditional and digital art gives me joy” says Göksu.

The poster “The Present” was inspired by the upcoming Broadway show with Cate Blanchett as the main character. The theme of the play is tragedy, and Göksu uses the colors and the pose of the characters to show that this play is going to be heavily emotional. “I was just a fan who designed stuff for the artists that I admire such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett. As different as these persons sound I find the same thing in their work and their personalities. Passion. I found my passion in them, in their work, and I reflected it in my art”.

Poster Monday: Drop cap for The Old Man and the Sea

The first Poster Monday spot of the month entitled “Drop cap design for The Old Man and the Sea” belongs to Sıla Özyıldız from Turkey. Sıla was interested in design since high school and studied graphic design in Spain. “I like to work on different styles and poster design allows me to use different techniques in a single work, such as typography and illustration, so I like that” says Sila.

About the poster, Sila says: “First, I illustrated a pattern of sea creatures. Then a letter, and then I made them work together. Book takes place mainly in the sea, and overall experience was not so pleasant. So pattern is in a shape of wave, not a calm and flat surface. Texture of letter is referring to water and wood, one is his only ally, his fishing ship; and the other was his enemy, the endless sea. Red color is blood, most important thing of story. The thing which brought him his ultimate nemesis, the shark.”

Poster Monday: For  Paris

The Poster Monday spot of the day entitled For Paris comes from Turkey and it belongs to Ozlem Habibe Mutaf Buyukarman. Ozlem was born in Izmir, Turkey in 1978; raised both in Izmir and Antalya, she studied Graphic Arts at the Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Arts Department and is graduate from the San Francisco State University, Creative Arts. She teaches graphic design and is the head of Graphic Design Department at Yeditepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts. She has worked as an art director in ad agencies for several years.

Ozlem explains the design: “This poster is condemning the horrible attacks in Paris, it is against terror, against destruction of many lives. In memory of the people got killed or harmed in Paris, I wanted to reflect the destructiveness and the unpredictability of terror. The green colour stands for the nature and harmony whereas the red among it stands for the violence and the orderless situation. I believe as a designers we always have effectiveness in social issues, at least we can create awareness and/or call to action for good, reflect the situation and express our thoughts…Thus, this poster was my visual reaction as a designer”.

Poster Monday: Aids – Packaging Matters…

For this Poster Monday we have a poster designer Ozlem Habibe Mutaf Buyukarman from Turkey entitled Aids – Packaging Matters…. Ozlem studied Graphic Arts at the Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts and  graduated with an Outstanding Graduate Degree and Award from the San Francisco State University, Creative Arts.

“The poster is a graphic interpretation of my -packaging paintings- series and designed for creating awareness about Aids” says Ozlem, “the main idea behind the poster is ‘spontaneous sex is tempting like a chocolate bar’. And packaging is a metaphor for protection, protects both sides. The red packaging with the word AIDS placed like an old logotype supports the image of chocolate bar. I rather preferred a popular icon (chocolate bar) instead of frightening people with unpleasing images of the disease. I think people are tired of watching images of sorrow, pain, violence etc. We have enough of those. Instead of frightening them with those kind of images, which will probably sweep the magic as well, I prefer reminding and keeping the tempting side but warning with a hint -packaging matters-, to encourage them to be careful. That is more realistic about saying keep away or don’t..”

Poster Monday: Non Violent Life Theory

The second Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to Çağdaş İnci from Turkey for his poster entitled Non Violent Life Theory. Çağdaş was born and raised in İzmir, where he currently works as an art director for an advertising agency.

Çağdaş’s designed this poster to draw attention to the dangers of individual armament. Every year thousands of people lose their lives in Turkey due to the bullets from firearms. An olive branch touches the first bullet and bullets begin to fall. In this way peace can end violence. The bullets are also a metaphorical representation of the years of violence.

Çağdaş İnci  tell us “Sharing my knowledge and my experience within my career plans with a reputable and innovative organizations to produce beautiful and clean work, continue to enjoy a successful and constantly acquiring new knowledge”.

The Polish Poster In Turkey

The Polish Poster In Turkey

The Polish Poster in Turkey project brings together several major exhibitions as part of Grafist 18 in Istanbul and the Polish Poster Week in Ankara. The next exhibitions in line will be on view between 20-26 October, 2014 at Bilkent University and CerModern in the Turkish capital.  This is the second part of the project Polish Poster in Turkey, in collaboration with the Poster Gallery in Kraków.  There will be two different exhibitions going on view. The first display will be held on the Bilkent University campus. The selection will include works by Roman Kalarus from Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice; Kaja Renkas from Silesian University, Art Institute in Cieszyn; Michał Jandura from Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Workshops with students, lectures, meetings and a series of exhibitions presenting contemporary Polish poster will be open to the public on campus.

Polish posters will also appear in the city centre at Cer Modern.  In the main lobby, more than 70 posters selected from the collection of Krzysztof Dydo will be available. Meanwhile, at CerModern’s extension,  HUB Art Space,  a solo show of works by Tomasz Bogusławski from Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk will be on view. Ekin Kılıç – artist and co-organizer of the event on the Turkish side, was inspired by Bogusławski’s work to host a graphics workshop at CerModern that will focus on animating his posters.

Meanwhile during Grafist 18, with the participation of Krakow Poster Gallery and The Gardens of Art Association, exhibitions, workshops and lectures related to Polish poster art will be held. The theme of this year’s festival is Henryk Tomaszewski – one of the greatest poster artists, an outstanding graphic designer, illustrator and educator, as well as co-founder of the Polish School of Posters.

The gallery of SALT Beyoglu in Istanbul is to exhibit a selection of 50 posters by Henryk Tomaszewski The second exhibition will include works by Henryk Tomaszewski’s students from all over the world, including Alain Le Quernec, Pierre Bernard, Karel Misek and Polish artists such as Wiesław Rosocha, Mieczysław Wasilewski, Marian Nowinski, Rosław Szaybo and others.
