For today’s Poster Monday we present the poster “En las Tinieblas Húmedas ” by Zulema Sanval; she is from Zacatecas, Mexico, graduated in Graphic Design from the Autonomous University of Durango Campus Zacatecas, where she is now a teacher, as a freelance Zulema is a publicist and Creative director of various editorial projects in local magazines and media, in addition she designing communication for various restaurant franchises, currently works in the institutional image of the Ministry of Health and is studying a master’s degree in Strategic Communication and Institutional Image in the Cuauhtemoc University.

The poster “En las Tinieblas Húmedas” was made for the collection “Sangre Devota”, convened by invitation by the International Poster Biennial in Mexico on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Mexican poet Ramon Lopez Velarde. About the poster Zulema tell us “In Jerez Zacatecas there is the Casa Ramón López Velarde Interactive Museum, a museum dedicated to the poet, the same place that was my ally as a source of inspiration where his muse Fuensanta was manifested with his poetry full of nostalgia, achieved great fame, and became considered “The National Poet”. Reading his poetry that reveals the hidden soul of a man helped me capture deep emotions that reflect his love for poetry; especially the phrase “All of you melt on me like a frost, and the translucent meteor stretched out of time” led me to the visual concept of my poster”.

Ghazal Hosseini, a distinguished member of the global artistic community, stands out as a highly accomplished graphic designer and educator with an impressive portfolio of achievements. Her journey, marked by academic excellence, international recognition, and a commitment to fostering creativity, reflects a deep passion for graphic design and education.
Ghazal’s academic journey is grounded in a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the Art University of Tehran, where she honed her skills and laid the foundation for her future success. Her commitment to visual communication is evident in her Bachelor’s degree from Shariati University of Tehran. As a graphic teacher and lecturer for the Ministry of Education in Iran, Ghazal has been instrumental in shaping the next generation of designers since 2010. Simultaneously, she serves as the Head of the provincial advisory and audit board for Photographic and Graphic Design at the Isfahan Research Center, showcasing her leadership in educational initiatives.

In addition to her roles in academia, Ghazal has made significant contributions as a freelance graphic designer and a Visual Communication lecturer at Amin and Sepehr University from 2011x, further enriching her practical and theoretical expertise. Ghazal’s work has reached global platforms, with her participation in numerous international invitational exhibitions. Noteworthy exhibitions include the “LOVE & PEACE International Exhibition” in Nagoya, Japan, and the “Perceptions II – Plants” exhibition in Poland. Her involvement in exhibitions from the United States to China underscores the international appeal of her design sensibilities. Ghazal’s talent has been celebrated through various awards, including the prestigious Gold Award at the United States International Poster Biennial in 2023. Recognition from the Ecuador Poster Biennale, the International Biennale of Theater Posters in Poland, and other global competitions highlights the universal appeal and impact of her work. Beyond her creative pursuits, Ghazal actively contributes to the design community by serving as an interviewer for the governmental teacher employment organization and participating in international jury panels.
Ghazal’s influence extends to curatorial roles, where she spearheads initiatives such as the International Students Poster Exhibition collaboration and poster workshops, fostering collaboration between Polish and Iranian art students. Ghazal’s analytical prowess is showcased in her conference article on the content analysis of the official school book “Human and Environment.” Additionally, her editorial role in the official school book “Graphic for Publications” speaks to her commitment to shaping educational resources.
Her journey is one of unwavering dedication to the art of graphic design and the education of future talents. Through her international contributions, awards, and leadership roles, she exemplifies the transformative power of design in creating a global dialogue. Poster Monday: Of Smoke and Pyres and Souls

The second Poster Monday spot of the month belongs to Martin Mendelsberg, he is an American designer that has been making posters for twenty years they are inspired by social, political, technological, and cultural issues. Martin have been inspired by designers from all over the world especially because of new media and social networks. He also has worked as brand experience designer and taught at colleges and universities in American and New Zealand for fifty years. His work has been exhibited internationally in Australia, New Zealand, China, South Korea, Germany, France, Poland, Ecuador, Russia and in the United States. The designer’s work is represented in permanent collections at The Magma Museum, Macerata, Italy, Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig, Germany, The Museum of New Zealand, Victoria University School of Architecture, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Yale University: Haas Arts Special Collections, The Florida Holocaust Museum, The Mizel Museum, Greeley Holocaust Observance Committee and The Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles. His Hebrew typeface designs, Torah and Torah Neue are distributed by Masterfont Ltd in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The poster “Of Smoke and Pyres and Souls” addresses the issue of Covid disaster in India has been at the top of the news, India’s people have suffered shortages of oxygen, tanks, and protective equipment. Posters are the voice of my conscience, watching so many people die sparked this poster. The metaphors are direct, oxygen tanks clustered together like human bodies, funeral pyres emitting dense smoke up into the sky and a distant flag of India in the background. The overall arrangement creates a dense cityscape desperately trying to breathe. “Poster art is a storytelling art much like poetry, I believe the metaphors in my poster have the capacity to create a call to action for a desperate situation” says Martin.

Poster Monday: Design the Future

For the first poster Monday spot of august we have the work “Design the Future” designed by Antonia Marisescu from Timisoara-Romania, a graduate of the West University of Timisoara, University of Arts and Design, with a PdD in Visual Arts, on the topic “Illustration in Graphic Design”.
She deal with digital illustration, graphic design, poster design, acrylic painting. Her approaches in design work are mainly focused on the symbolic treatment of messages. Antonia often use color, geometric shapes, the volatility of wavy shapes in my creative palette.

The poster “Design the Future” was made for participated in the poster biennial at the University of Arts and Design in Timisoara, 2020. This poster talks about the connection that current design can have with the future through people. “The poster wants to communicate through geometric shapes, through the play of colors and the font shapes used. The poster, which are played inside the composition with the messages hidden by symbols, numbers, geometric shapes and colors. It was created for aesthetic and decorative purposes. It was important for me in this project that I found inspiration in the book “100 Years of Swiss Graphic Design”. This book helped me as a landmark for the formatted compositional layout” tell us Antonia.

Welcome to another edition of Poster Monday. For this spot of the day we have a poster from Melike Bozkurt a am 23 years old designer. She lives in Istanbul Turkey, is a student at Yeditepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Design Department. At the same time, she studies at the Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Design.

Melike tell us about her poster “The subject of the poster I designed is“Obsessive Compulsive Disorder”. The reason I chose this topic is to raise awareness about this disease. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition in which people have repetitive thoughts called obsessions, and because this thought bothers them, they engage in repetitive behaviors called rituals or compulsions, usually in order to relax”. While designing this poster, my starting point was the brain, which is our thinking center. These complex and repetitive thoughts that occur in the brain greatly affect the life of the person. I wanted to reflect this confusion in the brain in my poster. On the other hand, I compared our brain to a walnut with its similarity and supporting its development.
We designers should support people with the disease by including these issues in our designs in order to raise more awareness of such diseases. I hope my poster will inspire these people, stay happy!”

Poster Monday: Save the Artic

The second Poster Monday spot of May goes to Olivier Ploux for the poster “Save the Artic”. Olivier was born in 1984 in Paris but lived most of his life in the French Alps in the little city of Annecy. In 2008, its a graduate from graphic design studies in Intuit-Lab school in Paris and study a year in Ecuador in Guayaquil in 2006. It’s where Olivier started the work that he now call “Des Maux en images” which could be translated as “Words into pictures”. Olivier work in an agency in Paris and kept going this illustration work as a hobby and finally moved back to Annecy where I work since 2012 as a graphic designer and illustrator where continue to illustrate the word and the daily news with the aim of being obvious, of being as clear as can be a great poster. Actually participate to poster contests and also illustrate in the daily newspapers LeTemps in Switzerland.

This poster was made after a call from Greenpeace to realize a poster on the theme: Save the Arctic. The poster is trying to alert on the melt of Arctic and the consequences like the extinction or the polar bear and also a tribute to the great french sculptor François Pompon who created the famous Pompon Bear which can be seen in the Orsay Museum in Paris. A poster has to create an instant and understandable message. “I hope this poster can contribute to open eyes on the melt of Arctic and what will happen because of it. During my studies, I have been amazed by the powerfulness of different poster designers’s work like Savignac, Cieslewicz, Walenta, Batory, etc. and discovered through workshops this exercice of creation. After that, it was done, i kept going creating and participating to contest and paste my work in the street… Design is everywhere but it shall not only be reduce to a merchantile purpose. It can help to talk, to sensitize to alert, to contest, to educate. That’s the beauty of it. Design life !” tell us Olivier.

For this Poster Monday spot we featuring the poster of Feixue Mei from United States. She is an interdisciplinary artist and an assistant professor at Northwest Missouri State University. Her creative practice and research have been recognized by PCA/ ACA Conferences, Transformative Works and Cultures, Printed Matter Art Book Fairs, Singapore Art Book Fair, Art and Education, International Design Award (IDA), Graphis, and Creative Quarterly. She earned an MFA in Design with a concentration in visual communications from Virginia Commonwealth University, a BFA in Graphic Design from Colorado State University, and a BFA in Visual Communications from Central China Normal University.

This poster was designed for a public lecture by Katharine Untch, a principal conservator and visiting lecturer. It was commissioned by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Northwest Missouri State University. This event was supported by Missouri Arts Council.
Fascinated by mass media and internet culture Feixue work explores diverse media such as publications, videos, performances, illustrations, comics, and installations, and examines how they may be used to address such contexts as globalization, cultural manipulation, language adaptation, intimate relation, as well as fluid identity.

Today´s Poster Monday spot goes to Aggeliki Athanasiadi and her poster “Logic and Prejudice”. She has been working as a visual communication designer since 1999. Aggeliki studied graphic design [BA] at AKTO [Athens, Greece], in collaboration with Middlesex University of London and obtained a Master of Arts & Design degree on Branding on International Conference Organizing. She is the founder and Creative Director of Graphic Stories Cyprus, the Annual Conference on Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Cyprus, aiming at the transmission of knowledge and specialized technical training, as well as exploring the modern trends in graphic design,

The poster “Logic and Prejudice” draws its theme from the myth of the Minotaur, who lived locked in the labyrinth and whom Theseus eventually managed to kill. The illustration shows the confrontation between Theseus and the Minotaur as part of a mural or ceramic. The broken parts of the composition refer to the terrible intensity of the battle between the two. This myth symbolizes the victory of the rational being who wants to determine his destiny, overcome superstitions, overcome difficulties and live free. It is the victory of the new world over the old, of logic over prejudice, of light over darkness. She believes in the effectiveness of teamwork and personal and professional development through continuing education.

Poster Monday: Belarus

The last poster of March is “Belarus” designed by Ivan Volyanskyi, a 28 years old motion designer born in the industrial city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.
Protests erupted in the former Soviet country last August after Lukashenko claimed a sixth presidential term in a vote that the opposition and Western diplomats said was rigged. Police in Belarus have detained more than 100 people, including five journalists, local media and a rights group have said, as they gathered for fresh rallies against President Alexander Lukashenko “The concept is to show clearly what is happening in the neighboring country – Belarus. There was no creative approach even during the examination … I just looked at the news and immediately a picture appeared in my head my contribution, although small … but I think it is… it is publicity and cultural protest against the dictatorship and violence! The poster is still alive and a very important communication tool and will be for a very long time! I always make posters as I have free time” tell us Ivan

Protest Posters by 100 Letterpress Artists

Letterpress studio New North Press has put together a beautiful exhibitionfeaturing  a mix of famous names and less-heard voices, who all use letterpress techniques to express their feelings on a range of contemporary issues.

The topics featured on the posters are wide-ranging, including Black Lives Matter, Brexit, climate change, gay rights, fake news, social housing, police violence, gentrification and the NHS. The show features works created by the global letterpress community in addition to a series of new collaborative works that aim to help bring new voices and issues to the fore.
