For today’s Poster Monday we present the poster “En las Tinieblas Húmedas ” by Zulema Sanval; she is from Zacatecas, Mexico, graduated in Graphic Design from the Autonomous University of Durango Campus Zacatecas, where she is now a teacher, as a freelance Zulema is a publicist and Creative director of various editorial projects in local magazines and media, in addition she designing communication for various restaurant franchises, currently works in the institutional image of the Ministry of Health and is studying a master’s degree in Strategic Communication and Institutional Image in the Cuauhtemoc University.

The poster “En las Tinieblas Húmedas” was made for the collection “Sangre Devota”, convened by invitation by the International Poster Biennial in Mexico on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Mexican poet Ramon Lopez Velarde. About the poster Zulema tell us “In Jerez Zacatecas there is the Casa Ramón López Velarde Interactive Museum, a museum dedicated to the poet, the same place that was my ally as a source of inspiration where his muse Fuensanta was manifested with his poetry full of nostalgia, achieved great fame, and became considered “The National Poet”. Reading his poetry that reveals the hidden soul of a man helped me capture deep emotions that reflect his love for poetry; especially the phrase “All of you melt on me like a frost, and the translucent meteor stretched out of time” led me to the visual concept of my poster”.

Poster Monday: Cardboard workshop

For the first poster spot of September we feature the poster “Cardboard workshop” designed by Kaled Avila from Puebla, Mexico. Graduated from the Higher School of Sciences and Humanities, he is Co-founder and active member of the graphic collective “Sin Centavos”, with which and together with his friends and colleagues, he has organized various cultural activities, such as: conferences, exhibitions and workshops based on graphic design; focused especially on university and master’s students. He has been selected in international competitions such as the international contest Second Call (2018), International Biennial of Design COW in Belarus (2019), winner of the second place in Posterterrorism (2020); Listen to my voice, Reggae Poster Contest, Peru Design Biennial, Iran International Blue Lotus Digital Visual Festival, among others.

The poster Cardboard workshop makes a subtle reference to Mexican culture. The mocking representation of death in its many facets, whether in a literary, graphic way, commonly decorated with flowers, dressed as a catrina or made of sugar and candy, is to say the least, something that is part of the daily life of the Mexican.

Poster Monday: Logic and Prejudice

Today´s Poster Monday spot goes to Aggeliki Athanasiadi and her poster “Logic and Prejudice”. She has been working as a visual communication designer since 1999. Aggeliki studied graphic design [BA] at AKTO [Athens, Greece], in collaboration with Middlesex University of London and obtained a Master of Arts & Design degree on Branding on International Conference Organizing. She is the founder and Creative Director of Graphic Stories Cyprus, the Annual Conference on Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Cyprus, aiming at the transmission of knowledge and specialized technical training, as well as exploring the modern trends in graphic design,

The poster “Logic and Prejudice” draws its theme from the myth of the Minotaur, who lived locked in the labyrinth and whom Theseus eventually managed to kill. The illustration shows the confrontation between Theseus and the Minotaur as part of a mural or ceramic. The broken parts of the composition refer to the terrible intensity of the battle between the two. This myth symbolizes the victory of the rational being who wants to determine his destiny, overcome superstitions, overcome difficulties and live free. It is the victory of the new world over the old, of logic over prejudice, of light over darkness. She believes in the effectiveness of teamwork and personal and professional development through continuing education.

Energizing Poster Campaign in NYC

Paying homage to the spirit of Milton Glaser’s “I LOVE NY” symbol, NYCxDESIGN teamed up with 21 to created the powerful poster campaign An Ode to NYC, a bold collection of images celebrating New York City’s creative energy at a time when it is needed most.

The collection can be found in design showrooms, restaurants and retail stores. They will also be digitally projected in quintessential NYC spots, like Fulton Center, the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center, and on-board the NYC Ferry fleet.

You can purchase these & more at the Poster House SHOP with proceeds going to the Black Artists + Designers Guild (BADG).

Poster Monday: Cinderella

Darya Martynava from Minsk, Belarus, is in our Poster Monday spot of the day for her poster entitled “Cinderella”. Darya graduated from the  Belarusian State Academy of Arts, faculty of Design and Decorative and Applied Arts, Department of Graphic Design. She she has currently exhibited 32 pieces, has been a finalist and participant in various Belarusian and international contests for poster, photo in Poland, Great Britain, Skopje, Novi Sad, Belarus, Russia and China.

The poster “Cinderella” was designed for a graduation project a series of posters to the repertoire of the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus (Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus). “I believe that the classical works of opera and ballet require a more modern, daring, non-standard, non-classical, but stylish competently true implementation in posters using impeccable technique and original ideas. My goal is to develop my own recognizable style. My posters are aimed primarily at young people, to show that opera and ballet are not nearly worse in emotions and exciting plot than a rock festival or going to the cinema. The posters are modern, aggressive, grotesque, bright, concise, somewhere brutal, but stylish and clean, like the youth themselves. The posters are not made in the standard manner; they are not sleek and gentle as it is customary to think about ballet and opera. Posters have a unique spirit of freedom. Each poster is designed in its own style. In my work, I combined hand-made graphics (the opera Bluebeard and His Wives, Bohemia) and processed author’s photographs (the ballet Sleeping Beauty, the opera Don Giovanni) and vector graphics (the ballets The Nutcracker, Cinderella ”,“ Swan Lake ”,“ La Traviata ”,“ Othello ”). I want to use all possible graphical tools” tell us Darya.

Poster Monday: The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party

For the first Poster Monday spot of November we are featuring the poster “The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party” from our previously featured designer Maria Papaefstathiou from Athens, Greece. She is a visual designer since 1996 and blogger since 2010, and has been focusing her research on poster design and particularly on social poster design and portrait design. Her main poster project is a series of posters celebrating great personalities of traditional and popular culture in Greece and Jamaica. Maria is founder and editor of graphicart-news.com blog and co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest.

The poster “The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party” was made for the Autopsia Colectiva 5 – Exposición Internacional de Carteles in Mexico, the theme is “DAY OF THE DEAD”. The organizers were looking for designs that would depict one of the Mexican proverbs and sayings that address the concept of death. “From the many proverbs, I chose the “El muerto al pozo y el vivo al gozo!” (The dead to the well and the alive to the joy!) in simple words “The dead in the drawer and the living in the party”. Which mainly tell us that life goes on and so we should move on because the dead cannot come back.  I chose a humoristic approach where we see the skeleton being disappointed by missing such a great party that takes place up there on earth. The reason for being humorous is because we should not fear death. It will come upon us all one day. So, there is no way we can avoid it. We can though enjoy our lives to the most so that …we can have nice memories when we pass from this life to the other one… I also chose the dancers to be modern and not traditional Mexican dressed because this message appeals to everyone on earth. The colours and designs are being inspired by Mexican tradition and culture, tell us Maria.

Poster Monday: Die To Be Reborn

For this week’s Poster Monday we have a design entitled Die To Be Reborn, from Naandeyé García Villegas, a graphic designer who lives and works in Mexico City. Naandeyé earned a BA degree in Design and Visual Communication from the National School of Plastic Arts, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico, and a MA degree in Visual and Media Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain.

After completing her degrees she devoted herself to teaching Digital Imagery and at the same time she worked on editorial projects for the publishing group Santillana. She then experimented with interactive digital media winning the Quorum Bronze Award (Designers Council Mexico) in the category Multimedia (2006). She worked at Unanime Creative Agency (Spain), carrying out projects for high visibility clients from Russia and Spain.

The poster Die To Be Reborn is a visual metaphor for death. The author poses the question: How can we perceive death as something poetic? How can we understand it as a transformation? The image seeks reconciliation with a poetic and symbolic death that sometimes is necessary to find our way again. For example, our emotions die and are reborn in a constant cycle. “Conceptually, it departs from the idea that death is the end of life. Death has a duality. On one hand it mourns with all its emotional manifestations, but on the other, it is an opportunity to relive life in a different realm (symbolically speaking)”, says Naandeyé.
