We present the first poster spot of August, “Women in Reggae Music” that belongs to Zuo Biao Peng (AK Bill) from Hong Kong, China. Poster Monday: Jazz

For the first Poster Monday spot of 2021 we have a posters from Zorana Urumovic. She was born in Bosnia and Hercegovina, studying graphic design at the Academy of Arts in Banja Luka.  Besides that, working as a graphic designer in one company in Banja Luka. In the last two years, Zorana has participated in various festivals and competitions in Poland, USA, Italy, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Ecuador and many others and won a first place.

Zorana tell us about her posters Jazz “This is poster about music, about jazz. Music is my big inspiration and there I found my way to express freedom, especially in jazz.  I wanted to visualize that music and the way how I see that. Graphic design is my biggest love and I found myself there, especially in poster and package design. I pour all my love into my artworks and I hope people recognize that.  I am always trying to learn something new, a new style, new ways of interpreting myself.

Poster Monday: Tame Impala GIG

Carilla Karahan was born in 1996 in Bishkek/Kyrgyzstan and is in our third Poster Monday spot of the month with his poster “Tame Impala GIG”. Carilla get into Istanbul Ayvansaray Univeristy Graphic Design department and in 2018 graduated with associate degree. He has participated in many group exhibitions, design events and regional and international design festivals such as: Posterrorism: “Economical Terrorism”, Zur Wut 2019; Graphic Matters Graphic Design Festival 2019 – Top 5 VIP Winners, Exhibition inBreda/Netherlands.  Weltformat Newcomer Awards 2019 – Top 20 Nomitated Posters, Exhibition in Lucerne/Switzerland, 15th “Jazz in the Ruins” Festival, “Jazz is a Man’s Thing” Theme, Exhibition in Gliwice/Poland, Peace Be With You! International poster project, Exhibition in Moscow/Russia. He ctually working as a freelance Graphic Designer. My works especially focuses on typography, illustration; poster design etc. and I like to experiment with the shapes and types.

The poster is the result of an invitation to create a gig poster for Dream Gigs Illustrated Project curated by In Hoodies and Manyetik Bant, Dream Gigs Illustrated is a series of gig posters. Imaginary gigs that never happened, missed gigs because of time and place, gigs that are experienced first-hand and have left their mark.  “First I discovered Tame Impala when I saw amazing animation music video to the song named “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”. I remember that I listen to this song again and again and it hooked me up. Then I listen to their whole discography, previous songs and albums. It was trippy, hypnotizing and blow my mind and I got addicted by them for a while. From this point I tried to express and illustrate my feelings on this poster. The LSD on the tongue resembling vinyl guides you to the parallel universe painted in psychedelic colors with its music. Wishing to see this group, which never came to Turkey, I imagine them playing at Zorlu PSM Studio stage with its powerful sound system and interesting stage design” says Carilla.

Poster Monday: Blues Poster – Mississippi John Hurt

The second Poster Monday spot of the month belongs to William Boulay for his poster “Blues Poster – Mississippi John Hurt”; William is a young french graphic designer since 2007 whit a Bac “Arts Appliqués” in hand, associated with a BTS in Product Design (Assistant of Industrial Creation) and a professional degree in design and communication. He started working as a freelance Designer/Project Manager in a lighting & furniture designer, also as a designer at Qdos (designer of accessories for Apple) at the beginning of the excitement of consumers for the iPhone. William continued as a freelance graphic designer and on other various projects. In late 2009 joined the company named Pixtel as a Graphic Designer print and web/wap. “My approach of design and graphic design is simple, always be able to take up challenges and to answer the customer’s request at best, guiding the client and offer something new and creative”.

“The “Blues Poster – Mississippi John Hurt” was born form when for the first time, I came across this mythical picture of the bluesmen Mississippi “John” Hurt taken by the polish-american photographer Bernard Gotfryd, I immediately fell in love with it. This photography is a strong mix of simplicity and complexity at the same time. Mississippi “John” Hurt is well known for his subtle mix of blues, country and bluegrass. His style is characterized by fingerpicking guitar playing and his soft voice, like a whisper. So the light on the photography is a great mix of all of this, with this cozy atmosphere and all that shadows that marry perfectly the wrinkles and all the weight of the complex years that Mississippi “John” Hurt had to passing through”. “I just had to take my pencil and make this poster which is at the same time a tribute to this great bluesmen and this great photographer, both underrated” says William.

Poster Monday: 108 Fahrenheit

For may’s last poster spot we have the work of Ali Soltanolamaei from Zürich, Switzerland. Ali is considered to work on fashion, music, technology or politics, in different disciplines from design system at a global scale to typography. He is connected over a shared love of Middle Eastern architecture.

The poster that we are now presenting “108 Fahrenheit “was designed for the music band concert at “KFK”; that is an interpretation of KAFKA a basement club for arts and concerts in Leipzig, Germany. 108 Fahrenheit it´s a band of pop and poetry is a narrow line in the local music scene, on which not a few ambitious bands quickly lose their balance, to represent this Ali approach the poster transforming the rhythm to the conceptual characters, playing with the spaces based on system design and margins, wanted to get audience’s attention by making the contrast on the frame.

Poster Monday: King Dude Gig Poster

For this monday spot we have the work of Michael Sallit. He is a freelance graphic designer based in Paris, France. Michael grew up in Dijon, France, famous for its Dijon mustard. Michael tells us “I always tinkered with computers. It was my hobby, my passion and my way of learning. Like most kids, I enjoyed computer games and listening to music (I was already obsessed with records sleeves). Every week, I went to the public library and picked up some Cd’s and books about music in general. My passion for graphic arts and illustration came from that time, when I saw posters, flyers and records sleeves in books.”

The poster “King Dude Gig Poster” is part of a series of four illustrations that are music related. For Michael, record sleeves and gig posters are guilty pleasures; “It’s really what made me want to become a graphic designer. I truly think that record sleeves have a huge influence on the perception of the music: an iconic sleeve will greatly change the way we listen to an album and vice versa. It is this consistency between two worlds (music and graphics) that attract me. Every style of music has its own codes, but we can easily bypass them, and that’s part of the game too. I always try to go beyond my immediate feeling about the music of a band to create a gig poster. From my perspective, I think the most important thing in current graphic design is the combination of readability and the “beauty” of the illustration.”

Pictogram vinyl music posters by Viktor Hertz
This is an elaboration of Viktor’s personal project ‘Pictogram music posters’, which Viktor started in 2011, as a creative challenge for a fresh hobby graphic designer. One year later, he made ‘Pictogram rock posters’, which included The Beatles, The Rolling and Stones and Bruce Springsteen, among others- each poster included 20-30 songs, and the posters were featured in numerous magazines and blogs, including Huffington Post, NME and Daily Mail UK.

Early in 2017, he went back to this project with an updated approach- no more vintage textures, now with bright colors and only putting one song on each poster. In total, there are currently 70+ of them, and the song titles are a mix of his personal favourites, inspiration from top lists and pure randomness. Some of the bands and artists include Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Adele, Daft Punk, Björk and Pixies. He also takes requests on his Instagram (@viktorhertz), where he also asks his followers for feedback on different layout options.

Viktor is now taking pre-orders of limited and signed prints via Kickstarter. The posters will be square vinyl cover standard size, printed on Hahnemühle German Etching 310g/sm. The posters are shipped worldwide, and the aim is to send them in time for Christmas 2017.

BIO: Viktor Hertz was born in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1983. In 2009, he started to do graphic design as a hobby, and has been freelancing since 2010. Some of his clients include Universal Music Group, Ray-Ban and Greenpeace. His work is usually focused on strong ideas and simple graphics, using metaphors, satire and humor. Viktor has been featured in numerous magazines and books, and has also had his own exhibitions- last time at Grand Central by Scandic in Stockholm, with 50 of his Pictogram music posters. In 2014, he started to write and direct short films, which all have been awarded and together selected at more than 100 international film festivals. He is currently combining commission work with personal projects.

International Reggae Poster Contest
The International Reggae Poster Contest is organizing two great exhibitions that will feature winning reggae-inspired posters from their 2016 competition. The Art of Reggae Exhibition is being held in the departures terminal at the Sangster International Airport in Jamaica. The display will feature 100 posters from the annual contest. The Freestylee Roots exhibition will be the second organized event taking place at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. This show will feature politically engaged posters from Michael Thompson who was the co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest.

The 2016 International Reggae Poster Contest that had 1270 entries submitted by 748 graphic designers from 75 nations. The aim of the poster competition is to build awareness about reggae music, and to establish a world-class “Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and Performance Centre” in Kingston, Jamaica. It also strives to help raise global awareness for Alpha Boys’ School, an institution for underprivileged youths in Kingston, Jamaica.

Poster Monday: The 21st Ankara International Jazz Festival

Yalçın Demirkıran, was born in 1983 in Mersin, which is located in the south of Turkey. He is our Poster Monday designer of the day. Yalçın has a bachelor degree in graphic design and a master degree, he now studies a doctorate (proficiency in arts) at Hacettepe University Faculty of Fine Art in Ankara. He also works as a research assistant at the same university. Yalçın is interested in typographic solutions in poster design, editorial design in the graphic design field, book design, and also the reflection of deconstructive theory in graphic design.

The 21 Ankara International Jazz Festival often attracted a number of experimental jazz groups from the northern European countries. Yalçın’s poster, which was designed in this way, was intended to bring the warm side of experimental jazz music to the cold climate side of northern Europe. “The idea was to bring the two concepts to the foreground. Experimental digital jazz and the cold climate of northern Europe. When it comes to jazz music, I decided to use trombones from instruments that came to mind first. But the use of trombones also reflected the experiment, the character concept. When I deconstructed the instrument, I used a trombone and cut off the vector element” says Yalçın. The poster shows that the parts the listener heard with the experimental concept “were not mistaken or correct, could not be analyzed correctly or incorrectly. At the same time, the writing character was determined to reflect a digital form. The participation of experimental jazz musicians in Northern Europe was expressed by using cold colors throughout the design.”
