Poster Monday: Hope

From Stockholm, Sweden and Thessaloniki, Greece, Nicos Terzis is our first Poster Monday featured designer of the day. Nicos is a visual artist based between two cities; he received a MFA´s in Graphic Art, Poster and Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland during the late 80s. Mainly Nicos works in his studio, and sometimes also teach printmaking and graphic art. In my practice, he focus mainly on painting, printmaking and illustration, but one of his central interests are definitely posters, and in particular, those with a socio-political message.

Nicos tell us about his poster “Hope”, I always like to open dialogues through my posters and I really think the best posters are the ones that don’t need to be explained in terms of what they want to tell. The message should be direct and the penny should hopefully drop at the first glance. The poster is a special form of creation because it unites social commitment with our individual experience. It also has a unique way of presenting itself. Traditionally, artworks are exhibited in spaces that oblige us to respect and appreciate the exhibits. Such as galleries, museums, churches, etc. There they are safe and keep the visitor at some distance. The poster on the other hand is the first artistic medium to have rejected this privilege. So, we can regard it as a precursor to art in terms of exhibiting in a public space e.g. squares streets etc. Also, the poster is a form of diagnosis/identification of what a society might suffer from….

Poster Monday: Stay Home

The last Poster Monday spot of October entitled “Stay Home” belongs to Filippos Fragkogiannis from Athens, Greece. He holds an MA in Visual Communication, and a BA in Graphic Design from Vakalo Art & Design College and the University of Derby. Having collaborated with acclaimed graphic and type designers, in 2019 he established his own practice. His research-based approach is rooted in semiotics, symbolism and the structure of visual language. With a genuine passion for typography, Filippos designs posters, print collateral and visual identities. Is member of AIGA and ISTD since 2020.

About “Stay Home” Poster, following the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, Poster Jam’s monthly challenge featuring the word “Home” took on new dimensions. This poster was widely circulated on the web and submitted to various Covid-related design initiatives around the world. The light blue color marks a health and hygiene emergency by closely relating to the color used for water, sterilization and hygiene representations. The poster’s visual impact is subtle while eliciting reliability, acceptance and safety to the viewer. For conveying the message, the widely recognizable font Helvetica is applied on a large scale. Its use relates to the simplicity of the instruction, communicated on a global level, calling for vigilance and adherence. The illustration of crossed arms, found in the letter B of Typefesse Pleine, represents the body part that should be thoroughly disinfected according to state instructions. The gesture of crossing arms can be seen as defensive body language while the form of the letter is reminiscent of a house roof or a bird’s wings, both referencing the notion of safety.

Poster Monday: The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party

For the first Poster Monday spot of November we are featuring the poster “The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party” from our previously featured designer Maria Papaefstathiou from Athens, Greece. She is a visual designer since 1996 and blogger since 2010, and has been focusing her research on poster design and particularly on social poster design and portrait design. Her main poster project is a series of posters celebrating great personalities of traditional and popular culture in Greece and Jamaica. Maria is founder and editor of graphicart-news.com blog and co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest.

The poster “The Dead in the Drawer and the Living in the Party” was made for the Autopsia Colectiva 5 – Exposición Internacional de Carteles in Mexico, the theme is “DAY OF THE DEAD”. The organizers were looking for designs that would depict one of the Mexican proverbs and sayings that address the concept of death. “From the many proverbs, I chose the “El muerto al pozo y el vivo al gozo!” (The dead to the well and the alive to the joy!) in simple words “The dead in the drawer and the living in the party”. Which mainly tell us that life goes on and so we should move on because the dead cannot come back.  I chose a humoristic approach where we see the skeleton being disappointed by missing such a great party that takes place up there on earth. The reason for being humorous is because we should not fear death. It will come upon us all one day. So, there is no way we can avoid it. We can though enjoy our lives to the most so that …we can have nice memories when we pass from this life to the other one… I also chose the dancers to be modern and not traditional Mexican dressed because this message appeals to everyone on earth. The colours and designs are being inspired by Mexican tradition and culture, tell us Maria.

Poster Monday: Stand Up for Peace! End the Wars!

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a political poster designed by Maria Papaefstathiou from Athens, Greece. Maria is a graphic designer, illustrator and blogger. She has been focusing her research on poster design, particularly social posters and portrait design. Maria is also the Co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest which was launched in December 2011 in partnership with creative activist Michael Thompson. She has been awarded and invited to participate in international exhibitions in South Korea, Jamaica, Greece, Turkey, Cape Town, Poland, China, Mexico, and the U.S.A.

The poster “Stand Up for Peace! End the Wars!” is a call to action for us to change our response proposes to this suffering. When people face the atrocities of war and it’s consequences, says Maria, “we tend to say ‘I wish…’ ‘I wish there was no war.’ ‘I wish peace all over the world…’ My wish is the world to stop wishing but instead get up and stand up for peace! For our rights! Our human rights to love and happiness.” I believe that design is a powerful tool that we  can use to spark enthusiasm and a call to action and to bring positive change to our culture and the world.”

Poster Monday: Double Faced

The second Poster Monday spot of december belongs to Ioannis Fetanis from Greece for his poster entitled “Double Faced”. Ioannis Fetanis was born in Athens, he studied Graphic Design at the Athenian Artistic and Technological Group and graduated with honours as Bachelor of Arts. He completed his studies in 2007 obtaining a Master of Arts in Design (Social Design & Visual Communication of N.G.O.) from Middlesex University, London.

“The poster “Double Faced” remembers the 23rd of August because it was not just another Black Ribbon Day, another European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism. Two faces, two personalities, two nations, two ideologies wholly identical, entitled differently though. So if you just name Stalin, as Adolf and Hitler, as Joseph, even if you swap their visages the result is counterpart.

The remarkable message communicated via the poster designed is the fact that the Totalitarian Regimes have no face, no country, no identity, no time. You can encounter extreme behaviours and murderous attacks everywhere, anytime by everyone not only in history books. Do not stay in the face, in the words used, in the language speaking, they are just function details, not distinctive characteristics. Focus in the master race, in their purpose of existence, in their mission possible.” says Ioannis.

Poster Monday: Night Arrows

The second Poster Monday spot of the day comes from Greece. It is entitled Night Arrows and it was designed by Dimitrios Giovis. He was born in 1970 and studied Greek philology and literature at the University of Ioannina. During his studies he developed a parallel interest in photography and the visual arts, and he recently obtained a degree in graphic design. Dimitrios tell us “the last few years witnessed the rebirth of the art of the poster, which has been enhanced with new narrative means and powerful imagery”.

The title Night Arrows alludes to the “weapons” of beauty and youth, femininity and seduction. It was originated from two different projects. The first one is a photographic project entitled Beauty sessions, and aimed at capturing gestures of femininity through the images of a young woman applying make-up in front of a mirror. The second project was purely graphic, namely a series of illustrations concerning mythology and the ancient gods. The image is the representation of Artemis (Roman Diana), the goddess of the hunt, associated also with moonlight, virginity, inaccessibility etc

Poster Monday: Experience something new

The second Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to Lila Skanavi  from Thessaloniki, Greece for her poster entitled Experience something new. Lila was born and grew up in Thessaloniki and has been working as a graphic designer since 1990. She started to get interested in social design after participating in the Poster for tomorrow’s Democracy Cafe workshop, that took place during the Graphic Design Educational Meeting Toolkit Startup at Thessaloniki . Her work was selected for the open call Carteles por Ayotzinapa in the Primera Bienal Internacional de Cartel ‘Oaxaca. Also one of her posters about “work right” was selected as shortlisted for Poster for Tomorrow international competition.

The poster Experience something new was designed for the Adelaide Fringe 2015 competition and it was created to give a positive message about the chances that we have to experiment new things in design. Lila tell us “I love the idea of spreading social messages around the world through poster design”.

30+ Exhibition Toolkit Startup

Our friends from Toolkit Startup have sent us some images of the featured posters from their recent exhibition 30+. This exhibition is the outcome of a workshop that was organized by the Greek Graphic Designers Association in the winter of 2014, with thirty-plus young designers who are still in school.

Thirty-plus posters is a reminder of the events that the Greek Graphic Designers Association has lived through in the thirty-plus years that it has been active. The participating designers did their own research, discussed their findings, made their choices, and created the final designs shown here.

W/Design4Life

The poster exhibition W/Design4Life will take place within the framework of the 2nd Meeting of Young Creatives, Toolkit Startup 2, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Design Toolkit, the organizer of the event, invited women graphic designers from all over Greece to design posters to raise awareness and promote prevention of breast cancer. The goal of the exhibition is to utilize visual communication to creatively highlight a serious social issue and to raise the public’s awareness of it.

The exhibition is realized with the invaluable assistance of the Thessaloniki chapter of “Alma Zois” – the Pan-Hellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer. The exhibition will be hosted in the Tabya Multi-purpose Venue, at 14, K. Melenikou Street in Thessaloniki, Greece, from April 23rd to May 3rd, 2015. Opening hours are 10am to 10pm and admission is free. The opening party will be held on Thursday, April 23rd, at 7:30pm.

Toolkit Stray Animals Catalogue

Inspired by the World Stray Animals Day on April 4th, the organizers of Toolkit Startup 2014, supported by Greek Graphic Designers Association, held a poster design competition open to students attending both public and private graphic design schools in Greece.

World Stray Animals Day was established in 2010 by an initiative of Dutch animal welfare groups, for the purpose of raising awareness in the international community regarding the plight of the 600 million stray animals estimated to be living under abject conditions all around the world. The participants were asked to visualize their point of view for the protection and action for stray animals and to create posters to help to raise awareness in the general public about this problem.

Out of all the posters submitted, the committee selected 33 most distinguished designs, of which the poster submitted by Nikos Kouirouklis, entitled “Heart”, was judged the best. All the distinguished posters were exhibited to the public in Thessaloniki, Greece.
