Today, we present the poster “Reggae Peace” by Carlo Cadenas. Carlo is a graphic designer based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was born in Baruta and grew up in San Antonio de Los Altos, Venezuela. He studied Visual Communication and Graphic Design at Instituto de Diseño Darias, and Advertising at Universidad Alejandro de Humboldt, both in Venezuela. When he moved to Buenos Aires, Carlo worked at Tribal DDB Argentina, and afterwards decided to go on working freelance. His posters have been exhibited in the Global Biennale of Graphic Design (Golden Bee), International Poster Biennial in Mexico, Lahti Poster Triennial, International Reggae Poster Contest, Typography Day, Show Us Your Type and others. His typography work has received the Type Directors Club Award with the Certificate of Typographic Excellence, the LAD Award and the CLAP Award.

The poster “Reggae Peace” we are featuring for this Poster Monday edition was created for the International Reggae Poster Contest. The poster depicts a symbol of peace – the “White Dove”, but this bird is not only a symbol of global peace, it also represents the bird of Reggae Peace. According to Carlo, “When we are in the presence of a feeling of serenity and calm it is because something helps us get there. That mood raises the best intentions in people, expresses our true thoughts and helps the acceptance of a reality that inspires the best change. When we hear music, we do so for many reasons, because we like it, because we identified with it, because it interprets us and it helps us to know ourselves. Music can inspire us with rhythms and launch us into a state of inner and outer joy. Reggae is the music of thoughts, the melody of the soul and the tune of words. It is the melody that inspires us to serenity, compassion, understanding and peace, because when we are in the presence of Reggae music, we are in true peace, we are feeling the Reggae Peace”.

Poster Monday: Stand Up for Peace! End the Wars!

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a political poster designed by Maria Papaefstathiou from Athens, Greece. Maria is a graphic designer, illustrator and blogger. She has been focusing her research on poster design, particularly social posters and portrait design. Maria is also the Co-founder of the International Reggae Poster Contest which was launched in December 2011 in partnership with creative activist Michael Thompson. She has been awarded and invited to participate in international exhibitions in South Korea, Jamaica, Greece, Turkey, Cape Town, Poland, China, Mexico, and the U.S.A.

The poster “Stand Up for Peace! End the Wars!” is a call to action for us to change our response proposes to this suffering. When people face the atrocities of war and it’s consequences, says Maria, “we tend to say ‘I wish…’ ‘I wish there was no war.’ ‘I wish peace all over the world…’ My wish is the world to stop wishing but instead get up and stand up for peace! For our rights! Our human rights to love and happiness.” I believe that design is a powerful tool that we  can use to spark enthusiasm and a call to action and to bring positive change to our culture and the world.”

This Poster Monday we are featuring a poster from the Iranian designer Amirhossein Rastegari entitled “Nelson Mandela”. Amirhossein has participated in several exhibitions in different countries around the world such as Hundred top poster in Germany, Italy, triennial Ukraine, Ekoplagat Slovakia, Serbia( Novisad), Japan, political poster triennial Belgium and many exhibitions in Iran.

He designed this poster to honor the memory of Nelson Mandela one of the greatest political leaders of the world, who fought against racism, “He was a
real man, as a free bird” says Amirhossein.

Poster Monday: Charlie Hebdoe Dove

The Poster Monday spot of the day goes to Sergi Rucabado From Mexico.  Sergio was born in Barcelona, Spain. He has a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Design from Elisava (BCN) and Southampton (UK), with Erasmus academic exchange in København (DK). He currently works as a freelancer in his own graphic studio Músicos del Titanic, and participates in visual communication projects that are in the thin line of advertising, design and art. He teaches at several Mexican institutions.

He designed this poster “Charlie Hebdoe Dove” after the unfortunate events of January 7 in Paris last year to show how a very important part of preserving peace is freedom of expression and tolerance..

Poster Monday: Somos Semilla (We are seed)

The Poster Monday spot of the week goes to Eréndida Mancilla from México for her poster entitled “Somos Semilla”. Eréndida studied Graphic Design at the School of Habitat and also has a Master in Graphic Design from the Research Institute and Graduate School of Habitat, at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi and a PhD in Architecture, Design and Urbanism from the Autonomous University of Morelos.

The poster refers to a series of episodes of violence that occurred during the night of September 26, 2014, in which Iguala municipal police attacked students of the Normal Rural School Ayotzinapa in Mexico. The events left many wounded and dead, as well as the famous 43 missing students. Eréndiad explains her design “I created this poster responding to the call organized by the artist Francisco Toledo and the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca, they invited the internacional community to participate in the design of a poster allusive to the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa. The poster shows a positive and hopeful vision for Mexican society, is a visual game in which 43 black tears shed become seeds that generate the possibility of creating something new. For Mexicans it very difficult to accept the situation of violence and impunity that occurs in our country, however, we are good people who are looking for a change, a better future”.

Poster Monday: Non Violent Life Theory

The second Poster Monday spot of the day belongs to Çağdaş İnci from Turkey for his poster entitled Non Violent Life Theory. Çağdaş was born and raised in İzmir, where he currently works as an art director for an advertising agency.

Çağdaş’s designed this poster to draw attention to the dangers of individual armament. Every year thousands of people lose their lives in Turkey due to the bullets from firearms. An olive branch touches the first bullet and bullets begin to fall. In this way peace can end violence. The bullets are also a metaphorical representation of the years of violence.

Çağdaş İnci  tell us “Sharing my knowledge and my experience within my career plans with a reputable and innovative organizations to produce beautiful and clean work, continue to enjoy a successful and constantly acquiring new knowledge”.

Skopje Poster 7th International Student Competition

Last week the winners of Skopje’s 7th International Student Poster Competition #DesignforPeace were announced. The goal of this poster competition is to create and promote concept of Peace and human rights. To encourage people, both in and outside the design and cultural community, to the movement of peace. The competition invited undergraduate and graduate students of fine arts, design and visual arts to send their work. They received a total of 2023 submissions from all over the world with the first prizes going to Ferhat Tunc and Aslihan Tatligil from Turkey, and Johanna Pedarnig from Denmar.The prizes include participation in the 2015 Jury for the 8th Skopje Poster Festival with fully covered expenses, the organization of poster exhibition in MKC Gallery 2015 and an ICOGRADA Certificate.

Other winners of the competition were: Evrim Aktepe (Turkey) who received the Icograda excellence award and honorary mentions by Zhang Yichi  (China), Marija Dimitrievska (Macedonia), Mary Yudina (Russia), Amadeus Fronk (Denmark), Megan M. Brajkovich (United States), Mingliang Li (China) and Hrant Petrosyan (Armenia).

The finalist and winners posters are now exhibited at the MKC Skopje and will be on display until December 20th. The exhibition also features the posters created by “Designers vs Kids”, a project where kids drawings were used for posters made by professional designers.

Michael Thompson peace activism work

About a year ago Maria Papaefstathiou published an interview with the artist Michael Thompson in the GraphicART web page, where he speaks about his work for positive change and peace Activism.

Michael Thompson is a graphic designer from Jamaica based on the United States. His wish is to make a difference with art and to bring awareness to the many social issues affecting a large section of our planet. He explains: “Art should speak loudly and make an impact for those who pause for a moment to look and think. Art should not only make pretty statements, but also make an impact on the lives of those who struggle or are oppressed. Art should shout.”

The Peace Factory

Ronny Edry is a graphic designer, teacher and father from Israel. In March 2012 he created an online movement for peace in the Middle East when he posted Facebook images declaring “Iranians, we will never bomb your country”. This image started the “we love you” community and spread internationally in Paris, France and Israel.
Later then, in October 2012, he established along a group of designers, a non-political organization called the Peace Factory. Their mission is making connections between Iranians, Palestinians, Israelis, Egyptians, Syrians, Lebanese,Turkish, Jordanians and other nationalities via mass media campaigns and events that promote the peace in the Middle East and communication with the “other side”.
