Poster Boys – poster dialogues

Brandon Schaefer & Sam Smith aka the Poster Boys are the creators of a podcast about contemporary movie posters. Each Episode presents a selection of posters, links and resources, providing the audience with a rich and ever growing base for the study of contemporary poster design. If you like painted posters from the 80’s and 90’s, you will surely find something there as well.

Episode 1 is dedicated to the genius Saul Bass and uses Flat File as an excuse to discuss various international posters for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.

Episode 2 is about movie posters from 2014,  and an analyzis on the enigmatic posters for Stanley Kubrick’s The shining.

Episode 3  is dedicated to the work of Drew Struzan, the painter who created iconic posters for movies like “Back to the Future”, “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars”.

Oscars 2015 – artist poster series

The emotion of the Oscars is now starting to fade away. We now know the results, but not everyone had the opportunity to see this posters series created by 14 artists from various countries.

The motto of this series was “Imagine what’s possible”. Using different styles but consistent colors and the Oscar as a central point in the composition as a the recipe to create a coherent, pure and expressive collection, the artists put their minds to work. The posters chosen from this special set were made by Mogollon (United States), Blastto (Spain), Hattie Stewart (United Kingdom) Petra Borner (Sweden) and Steve Wilson (United Kingdom).

If you liked our post about the Brandalism interventions you are definitely going to like this! This time we want to show you  somebody who doesn’t remove ads from their places but treats them as canvas for his art and changes them into something with new form and new meaning.

Berlin based artist, Vermibus, changes the faces of models and stars on street posters, banners and city lights into portraits posters. The deformations made by Vernibus are a way to pose some interesting questions: What is real beauty? And what is the real power of a brand? The silhouettes and images, as well as the identity of the models that appear on the ads are often already transformed by make-up and Photoshop retouching, making Vernibus interventions just another, more critical form of transformation. The result is a striking image where the women on the photos become anonymous, leaving only the brand, without face. What do you think about that kind of intervention on city ads?

BAFTA 2015 Movie Posters

Illustrator Malika Favre, together with the British creative agency Human After All, created an illustrative campaign for the BAFTA  (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) 2015 Awards. This coherent series of posters showcases the main movies appearing in the competition: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, Birdman and The Theory of Everything. The shadows help to tell us a part of the movie’s story – this is a very creative way to mix the concept of the spotlight with an interesting and mysterious kind of movie teaser.

Brandalism – street art vs street ad

2 days, 40 artists, 10 UK cities. Over 365 ad takeovers. Brandalism, the biggest subadvertising campaign in UK, was a big intervention consisting in swapping street ads with works of participating artists. The projects were often ironic takes on the ads they were replacing. The Brandalism series are a type of critique about the condition of modern society. Plakiat: Alternate movie posters

Movie posters are a popular and important branch of poster design. On the Web we can find lists of best contemporary posters as well as pages with older, classic posters. And finally, from time to time, we find series of alternative designs that people have created for their favourite films. In the past we’ve shown you some of these projects on our site and we’re always on the hunt for new and exciting examples to share with you.

Our latest movie poster discovery is Plakiat – series of alternate movie posters created by Maks Bereski. For him posters are a form of visual stories about movies watched by him, and good excuse to talk about cinema. His collection grows constantly, as new movies appear on the screen. You can check complete poster series on Plakiat Facebook page and on his blog.

Why do you think creating of alternate movie posters is becoming more and more popular? Is it a kind of visual commentary for the movie created by poster designers? Last week was the official release of the new poster for the Ant-Man film by Marvel, which is due to be released this year.  The result was this unique design that echoes of the old film posters created by the master Saul Bass.

Movie posters in neon GIF versions

Simple, well recognized motives from iconic movies were used to create neon posters. They’re prepared as GIF-s and they blink just as old neon signs on the walls. The whole series was prepared by MR Whaite, who likes to play with symbols of popculture and turn them into funny GIFs. His neons would definitely look great as a part of the Vegas cityscape!
