Poster Monday: “War Trends”

Alejandro Ortiz from Colombia is in our Poster Monday spot of the week with the poster “War Trends”. He studied cinema and somehow ended up working in advertising agencies, currently working for McCann / Bogotá. His work have been part of biennals, exhibitions & publications like RP Latam, PosterPoster.org, adage.com, WeltFormat, Tschutti Heftli, Luerzers Archive, etc.

“War Trends” is a poster design series based on the Google searches made in war torn countries in 2019: Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and South Sudan.  A series of 6 posters is designed in a weekly basis based on the data found on Google Trends and then uploaded to war-trends.com and @wartrends on IG. “The people tend to reveal their deepest fears, distractions, needs and passions in the Google search bar. This is a visual exploration on the interests of the people that are facing such a difficult time. Why are they looking for these subjects in the middle of an armed conflict?. I don’t have any answers, just assumptions” says Alejandro.

Poster Monday: Donate Life

Ali Delzendehrooy from Kish, Iran, is our featured poster designer for this new edition of Poster Monday. He has been a designer for more than 14 years, and so far he has participated in numerous events related to graphics, images and cartoons. Ali has designed more than 100 logotypes, posters, integrated visual identity, and also designed posters for a range of events featuring music concerts, cultural events. It should be noted that he have been involved in contests and events related to the design of social posters. He is also the chief executive officer of “Afdesta” studio and art gallery. Ali is graduated in graphic design and a member of the Iranian graphic designers association (IGDS).

The poster we are featuring here today under the title “Donate Life”. This poster is designed for a workshop event (poster workshop design) called donating organs after death. And given that fundamentally donating organs after death can lead to the lives of many people who are dying or who are dying due to problems with their bodies, this poster is designed with the theme, Donate like a donation. This type of events becomes very necessary because despite continuing efforts at public education, misconceptions and inaccuracies about donation persist.

Poster Monday: Human Rights

For this new edition of Poster Monday we are featuring a talented designer. His name is Tomaso Marcolla, he is from Italy and currently lives in Trento. Tomaso is graduated from the Art Institute of Trento and started working as a graphic designer in 1985, is Member of AIAP (Italian association planning for visual communication) and member of the BEDA (Bureau of European Designers associations).
Today’s poster “Human Rights” was made for the “Poster for tomorrow” association in Paris, with the support of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), that invited 100 designers to create a poster to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human rights.
“My poster represents a fish, precisely a Salmerino, wrapped in a sheet of paper on which the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is printed in the original version of 1948. It is an improper use, it is not used for its purpose and that is to sanction the human rights but even to wrap the fish, for which we use newsprint, usually an old newspaper. This means that there is still no full respect for the rights for all and in many cases the Declaration is waste paper.

The thing I wanted to express is provocative I hope this poster, which wants to be a provocation for the way in which the “Declaration” is used, can make us reflect and, perhaps, open our eyes to situations where human rights are not respected, perhaps, facts that also happen in front of us” says Tomaso.

Poster Monday: Lillie for Self Ownership

For the last Poster Monday spot of April we have a poster coming from England designed by Stuart Farr who has a degree in graphic design, specializing in editorial design. Stuart is currently working in the north west of England.

“The piece is called “Lillie for Self Ownership” and was inspired by the environment of social justice, government overreach, and the problems of digital privacy. I designed her to be an expression of rebellion in a world increasingly concerned with each other’s behavior.

The artistic motive was to capture the spirit of youthful rebellion with as much style and brazen sass as I could stomach. To signal irreverence in the face of authority, Lillie is savoring a lollypop. To demonstrate commitment, she cut Anarchy into her face. These juxtapositions are powerful tricks when designing art. In the graphic tradition of Rosie the Riveter or Jim Fitzpatrick’s Che Guevara I would hope ‘Lillie’ becomes synonymous with a new kind of liberation away from the tyranny of the deep state, the nanny government and the postmodern communists who volunteer to police their fellow human. Poster Monday: Scale of gender

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster designed by Tuğba Çelik, an İstanbul based graphic designer at Yeditepe University Fine Arts Faculty, Graphic Design Department.

Gender inequality is a big problem that seems to have no end, in some countries and religions women lack basic human rights. In the poster “Scale of gender”, Tuğba tells us “I think about women’s rights and the inequality of women and men in the world. It is very important to look at the perspective. The first thing coming to mind is scale. When we look at it from a different point, we can see different things. For example, if we look at a scale from above, we see equal. But if we look from the side we see the truth. I designed the poster because people have to look at different angles now”.

Poster Monday: Hope

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster from Selin Türkölmez Balkara from Istanbul, Turkey, for her poster “Hope”. Selin lives in Istanbul and studied Art Design Management at Yeditepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts. She worked as a Visual Manager within a graphic design department of a company and is currently studying in a graphic design master program. Selin also works as an academician at Yeditepe University in the Graphic Design Department.

In the early days of 2017, more than 200 refugees have died drowning when crossing over the Mediterranean Sea between Turkey and Greece or freezing to death in deadly weather conditions. They cross the sea in makeshift boats which they hoped would bring them to safety. “Hope” was a reaction to the refugees who drowned because of the bad conditions of those boats. “As a graphic designer we always need to express our opinions and feelings in social events and try to draw attention to the events to make a change”, says Selin.

Poster Monday: Liberty for All

The second Poster Monday spot of May goes to Roy Villalobos for the poster “Liberty for All”. Roy was born in Chicago and at an early age his family decided to move to Mexico. He studied graphic design in the Faculty of the Habitat in The Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi (UASLP). In the year 2000, he moved back to live in Chicago working as a freelance graphic designer for social and cultural non for profit organizations, mostly in the Hispanic market. Roy’s work has been published in numerous magazines, and he has been invited to be part of international jury panels of poster contests while providing workshops and conferences. His other passion and hobby is creating fine arts by painting murals and surrealism leading to his artwork being commissioned from organizations in the public and private sector.

The poster “Liberty for All” reflects a fundamental change in the United States itself. Death is reflected in half of the face of the Statue of Liberty, while the second half of the face is crying. It represents a change in what was supposed to be originally conceived as an emblem of friendship between nations and freedom from oppression. The Statue of Liberty is the Mother of Exiles, greeting millions of immigrants and embodying hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life in America. This poster shows a contrast with how liberty has transformed from the original idea.

The poster was created for a protest march in 2010 against The Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (introduced as Arizona Senate Bill 1070 and thus often referred to simply as Arizona SB 1070). It was the broadest and strictest anti-illegal immigration bill and has received national and international attention which spurred considerable controversy.

Poster Monday: Trump and Merkel

The Poster Monday spot of the day “Trump and Merkel”  belongs to Barbara Ehrbar and Matej Moravec. Barbara is a graphic designer born in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, she studied at Ecole Cantonal d’art de Lausanne and the School of Visual Arts NYC ; Matej was born in Prague CZ, and studied at Graphic School Prague and Academy of applied Art and Design; they both work on Superbüro, a graphic design studio that was founded in 2001 by Barbara, which focuses on designing books, catalogs, flyers, posters, magazines, brochures, logos and visual identities, websites, way finding systems, illustration and a lot more.

The poster “Trump and Merkel” contributed to the discussion on Donald Trump’s election and the future of the world. “The election of Donald Trump for president of the US shocked us. So we decided to express our thoughts in an illustration and print it as a poster. The poster was showed in the shop window of our studio. The Illustration is based on Donald Trumps «grab-them-by-the-pussy»-statement. Instead of the political handshake trump is grabbing Merkels pussy.” says Barbara.

Poster Monday: Insomnia

The Poster Monday spot of the day, it’s entitled “Insomnia” and was designed by Julia Monegier Garbuzova from Russia. Julia was born and raised in Rostov-on-Don. She graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier and now she is the Art director & graphic designer of a small agency in Paris. She loves typographical and hand made posters, like the ones by Peter Bankov and Michal Batory, and is a fan of the Polish poster school.

The poster “Insomnia” is a simple photo, slightly improved in Photoshop. The images was made using UV Black Light. Julia created the poster just after the Nice attack in France “I wanted to do some posters but the ideas didn’t come… I could not concentrate on my work and I was too anxious. Why? Because the fear becomes the part of our daily lives and prevents us to create and live normally” says Julia.

Poster Monday:  I Have the Right to Live a Life far from the Violence

For the Poster Monday spot of the day we have a poster from a previously featured designer entitled “I Have the Right to Live a Life far from the Violence”. Amirhossein Rastegari from Iran, graduated in Graphic Design also was training by Ghobad Shiva one of the best graphic Designers the world wide.

This poster “I Have the Right to Live a Life far from the Violence” was made with the assumption that violence against women, and the concept is that a woman is like a chair to which everyone can use, this tragedy is a huge violence against every woman. “I think we can artists change an insight of the world’s people, who they can have a good day for themselves and their children.” says Amirhossein.
